SpatialNews 2000 GIS Industry Employment Survey
Based on the replies we received, here is a profile of a GIS professional. Note,
this is a profile based on our sample population which is typical of a GIS user who visits the
GeoCommunity website.
A profile of the working GIS Professional:
Working in the industry between 2 and 10 years, a large portion of GIS professionals work for the government,
and quite often is employed by a relatively large company or corporation (employing more than 100 people).
In general, a degree is held, with a large number of people holding Masters degrees. Half of the GIS professionals
have taken out student loans, however, it is uncommon for the GIS user to get help paying off loans from an
employer. As can be expected, an educational background focused on geography, and/or GIS is held, with many
users also trained in specialty fields such as geology, forestry, or engineering. Expected salary ranges
from $40K-$70K per year, although many workers feel they are underpaid and a large proportion feel they will not be in their
current job in 5 years from now. In general, the GIS professional feels comfortable that he/she is keeping up with
technological advances.
