I am working as a mapping officer with the Bermuda Government and part of the Government’s Topographic Map Database (TMD) we have a roads centerline shapefile along with buildings polygons and address point shape files but the roads files are not in a structured network at present i.e. they exist as simple segments of line. We are working with ArcGIS 9.3.1. There is an increasing demand for GPS enabled navigation within the government and the private sector. Several private organizations are researching personal navigation and cultural mapping. As part of our GIS strategy and Spatial Data Policy we envisage making spatial data available to all via a spatial data portal. Does anyone have experience with design and provision of transportation data (primarily roads) to various users for use in navigation applications? I am going to develop a sample network area using the Network Analyst extension but I do not want to develop this to a high level only to find that other software and GPS navigation applications need some other format. Are there any standards out there for generic road network spatial data or is it just a case of various proprietary formats depending on the Hardware used e.g. Garmin, Navtech etc?
Any feedback or pointers from people with experiences in this area would be welcome.
Thanks in advance
John
