The new STDS DEM data can be used by ArcView3.2 but requires editing of the xxxxIDEN.DDF file. First make a COPY of xxxxIDEN.DDF file (for safe keeping). Then use a text editor to open the xxxxIDEN.DDF file. You must then replace the words "SRPE: RASTER PROFILE and EXTENSIONS" with "SDTS RASTER PROFILE" ***you must also enter 16 spaces following SDTS RASTER PROFILE________________***. MANY third party conversion programs will not work with the NEW SDTS files [Use ArcViews SDTS Raster To Grid utility]. Here is a site that explains the proper procedure

It took me several attempts to get this procedure to work BUT IT DOES WORK, stick with it...
