Autodesk Launches Point A-Potentially the World’s Largest Online Community
for Designers and Engineers
Access for Autodesk customers is just a click away from their desktop software
San Rafael, Calif., April 12, 2000—Autodesk, Inc., today introduced Autodesk® Point
A, the company’s new portal serving designers and engineers. Located at
http://pointA.autodesk.com, the site provides a centralized online community and
resources for a broad range of designers, engineers and architects. The portal enables
this important constituency—as well as their partners, customers and suppliers—to
extend their knowledge, aggregate a wealth of information critical to their practice, and
transform the way they work.
Autodesk Point A will serve the design community by supplying necessary resources in
four main areas including industry specific content, community, collaboration, and
customer care. As an example of the rich community Autodesk Point A provides, there
are more than 75 discussion groups and hundreds of links to industry organizations on
the portal. The industry specific content area of Point A includes, for example, industry
specific news and abstracts, the ability to lease industry specific applications and
searching services for product information. Finally, the customer care area of the site
ensures users have the latest tools and product information at their fingertips so they can
maximize their productivity with Autodesk software.
Starting today, the portal will be available in English only, to the millions of customers
with access to Autodesk software through a new downloadable Internet extension plug in,
AutoCAD® 2000 iX, available through Autodesk’s e-store at
http://www.autodesk.com/estore.
In addition, it will be available to millions of other designers through a direct web
connection via Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. Design and engineering
professionals touch every facet of a product life cycle and supply chain. They are
responsible for a wide variety of items people rely upon daily, including the design of
everything from ballpoint pens to highway infrastructures. Because of this, the group’s
scope of influence goes well beyond design, into other functional areas of the enterprise
including marketing, manufacturing, inventory control, and sales.
"I really like the philosophy behind this site," said Jim Brinkmeyer, CAD Manager at
OTAK, Inc., an award-winning planning, engineering, and architecture firm that
specializes in transportation, growth management and urban and community design.
"Autodesk Point A will help bring our community together in one central place—and only
Autodesk is uniquely positioned to do this. I believe it will also help us communicate
better as an industry, and that makes a lot of sense."
"Point A is the natural access point to the Internet for designers and
engineers—especially those who are Autodesk’s customers," said John Sanders,
executive vice president of the Design Solutions Division at Autodesk. "Because the
design process is inherently iterative, Point A will help designers and their constituencies
realize significant productivity and cost benefits from online resources and collaboration
services."
Point A is one example Autodesk’s strategy to bring design to the Internet. Autodesk is
web-enabling is core desktop products, developing browser-based applications, and
introducing Internet portals that foster commerce and communication between Autodesk
users and their customers.
