Autodesk - GIS Data Transformer Extension (dtX) and SDTS and VML Drivers Enable Users to Exchange Data More Easily
AUTODESK OFFERS “DOWNLOADABLE” PRODUCT EXTENSION AND FORMAT DRIVERS FOR AUTOCAD MAP 2000 AND AUTOCAD LAND DEVELOPMENT DESKTOP USERS

SAN RAFAEL, Calif., April 26, 2000-Autodesk, Inc., today announced the availability of the GIS Data Transformer Extension (dtX), a downloadable data translation extension for users of its AutoCAD Map® 2000 and AutoCAD® Land Development Desktop Release 2 products. Autodesk also announced two new format drivers, Spatial Data Transfer Standard (SDTS) and Vector Markup Language (VML), giving customers instant access to standard and widely used industry formats that can be downloaded for immediate use. Professionals in communications, government, utilities, and land development?related industries can now exchange data more freely with colleagues and customers as well as make more informed decisions. These drivers allow users to incorporate a wide variety of existing data including text documents, photographs, paper-based drawings, and CAD-based drawings into a single system to provide a 360-degree review of the site before committing resources and field crews. Initially, these “downloadable” solutions will be available only in English. Autodesk plans to leverage the Web to deliver other popular format drivers on a regular basis.

“Our customers expect Autodesk solutions to be built using the most current and reliable software available. They also count on us to keep an eye on the future and be first out of the gate with new technology to keep them ahead of the competition in their markets,” said Joe Astroth, executive vice president, GIS Solutions Division at Autodesk. “Thanks to the Autodesk GIS Data Transformer Extension Announced, Internet, serving their needs has never been easier than it is today. Customers can quickly and easily download GIS functionality from the Web and put it to use immediately without experiencing downtime.”

“Finally a software company is acting to implement industry-standard formats that will facilitate sharing design information. We share data with a myriad of users from subconsultants to governmental planning agencies. Autodesk's GIS dtX engine and SDTS and VML drivers will expand our ability to harvest data that can be rapidly used to design and construct infrastructure in a short time," said Tim Burley, P.E., partner at Burley-Guminiak & Associates, an environmental consulting, civil, and site engineering firm in Canton, New York. "Our firm has a reputation for completing projects rapidly and accurately while meeting project budgets. Software tools we use, such as the ones offered by Autodesk, show vision and represent recognition that design engineering firms are the stewards of client land development data."

Providing Tools via the Web

Autodesk product extensions are Web-delivered software tools that provide theme-based features to address specific collaboration and communication needs of the planning and design community in key industries. Now users can easily customize and enhance their software as new tools become available via the Web rather than waiting 12?24 months for a new version of the product. The GIS dtX is the second Autodesk? product extension delivered to users of AutoCAD® 2000 and AutoCAD 2000?based products. Earlier this month, Autodesk released AutoCAD 2000 Internet Extension (iX), which gives users greater access to design data and collaboration via the Web.

In the future, Autodesk will deliver the LDDT Slope Annotation Extension (sX) for land development professionals using AutoCAD Land Development Desktop Release 2, and the 3D Studio VIZ? Internet Extension (3vX) for Web-enabled product visualization across all industries. Autodesk product extensions are part of the company’s overall strategy to take Autodesk GIS Data Transformer Extension Announced, its customers to the Internet through three initiatives: Web enabling its desktop products, developing browser-based applications, and creating portals to aggregate online communities that foster e-commerce business-to-business activities.

GIS dtX Functionality

GIS dtX is a 4.6MB engine that gives users better and more extensive import and export capabilities for their data. Professionals with large amounts of legacy data will save time and increase accuracy. Using drag-and-drop functionality, customers can easily work with industry-standard formats such as STDS and VML.

The primary industries that use AutoCAD Map and AutoCAD Land Development Desktop software?communications, utilities, government, and land development?all have a primary concern in common: integration of the wide variety of legacy data into a common, useful set of information. The Autodesk GIS Solutions Division is addressing this problem with an innovative new approach: data exchange functionality and access to many different drivers via the Web and Autodesk’s new design resource portal, Autodesk Point A at http://pointA.autodesk.com. Customers in these industries will see immediate benefit from GIS dtX because once they have purchased the engine, they can download the appropriate driver for a given data format as it’s needed, without waiting for a major software upgrade to obtain new drivers.

SDTS and VML Drivers Offer Easy Data Exchange

Less than 1MB each, the SDTS and VML drivers are easily downloadable and accessible to customers via the Internet. Because these are Web-based offerings, additional drivers will be posted regularly. The combination of the GIS dtX and the SDTS driver enables users to easily import SDTS data into AutoCAD Map 2000 or AutoCAD Land Development Desktop Release 2 and manipulate it using any standard format. Customers working with Autodesk GIS Data Transformer Extension Announced, government agencies will realize instant value when they download the SDTS driver. As of January 2000, all government data containing a spatial element must be published using the SDTS file format standards.

Supported by Microsoft® PowerPoint®, the Autodesk VML driver provides a simple way to publish thematic maps in presentations for compelling and exciting communications. The VML driver equally benefits customers who need an easy way to publish vector data on the Web.

Pricing and Availability

Sold separately, the GIS dtX, SDTS driver, and VML driver are available today in U.S. English in the United States and Canada at a price of US$99, $169, and $199, respectively. They are quickly and easily downloadable through two online delivery vehicles?the Autodesk store, at www.autodesk.com/purchase and Autodesk Point A at http://pointa.autodesk.com, the premier design portal for aggregating design information.
