RangeStar Unveils New Technology to Support Location-based Applications in Consumer Electronics Devices
GSM World Congress 2000, CANNES, France, Feb. 1, 2000 - GPS antenna can be easily integrated into communications and computing devices such as PDAs and laptops.

In just a few years, as you travel across the globe, imagine being able to determine your exact proximity from the next inbound train. When you search for hotel information, your computer will automatically guide you to the closest high-quality hotel that will suit your personal needs. How? Using RangeStar Wireless's new global positioning system (GPS) embedded (internal) antenna technology.

RangeStar today unveiled a cost-effective new solution for consumer electronics companies that wish to embed location-based applications into their wireless devices. Consumer electronics manufacturers can embed RangeStar's new GPS internal antenna in a variety of devices, including personal digital assistants (PDA), laptop computers and wireless phones, to support a host of innovative location-based applications.

"As location-based applications continue to grow, RangeStar's GPS embedded antenna allows consumer electronics manufacturers to easily and cost-effectively integrate high-performance location-based applications into their devices," said David McCartney, executive vice president for RangeStar. "This technology will open up a whole new set of innovative and revolutionary applications in computing and other communications devices."

RangeStar's new embedded antenna supports advanced hemispherical illumination, meaning it maximizes its exposure to the GPS satellites located in the hemisphere, thus providing the best GPS reception available. It operates at 1575 MHz and has a gain of +3 dBi and measures 29 x 20 x 11.4 mm - about the size of a quarter.

Potential applications include: Navigational assistance from your PDA or laptop computer when lost; information on local events and weather that are automatically sent to your computing device; and the automatic receipt of a coupon for free fries as, for instance, you pass a McDonald's.

Previously, GPS-based antenna solutions were too expensive for consumer electronics manufacturers to integrate them into devices. RangeStar's new GPS embedded antenna represents a breakthrough by offering these manufacturers an internal antenna that is as little as one-fifth the cost of existing solutions.

In addition, RangeStar's new GPS antenna allows GPS integrators to maximize their circuit board real estate because RangeStar's new GPS antenna can be easily mounted over other components that currently populate electronic devices' circuit boards.

The embedded antenna is commercially available today. Third-party manufacturers interested in any of RangeStar's leading antennas should contact RangeStar directly.
