It's a Small World
(January 2000) -- President Clinton used a
tiny map of the Western Hemisphere created by IBM
Research as a backdrop for his announcement of the $497
million National Nanotechnology Initiative during a speech at
the California Institute of Technology January 21. Only
one-hundredth the diameter of a human hair, this map was
made by a scanning tunneling microscope that deposited
small clusters of gold atoms to form each dot.

Nanotechnology is the science of controlling matter at
the atomic scale. Many scientists expect that nano-scale
experiments could ultimately lead to the creation of
revolutionary new materials and to advances in computer
chips and data storage. Some of the world's leading
authorities on nanotechnology are at IBM Research, and
they are available to explain this technology and its future
implications.
