LizardTech Announces Plans for 64-Bit MrSID Imaging Language to Support Intel's Itanium Processor using IA-64 Architecture
INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM, PALM SPRINGS, Calif., Feb. 15, 2000-LizardTech™ Inc., a leading developer of imaging technology, announced today its plans to work with Intel® on the development of the MrSID™ Imaging Language for Intel's IA-64 architecture. The implementation of MrSID will be on Itanium™ processor-based systems, Intel's first microprocessor based on IA-64 architecture.

“MrSID is ideally suited to take advantage of the IA-64 processing architecture, giving users unprecedented digital imaging power and features for e-commerce and Internet server applications,” said John. R. Grizz Deal, LizardTech’s president and CEO. “By combining the power of MrSID with Intel Itanium processors, business users can use one image file for every purpose, from thumbnail to billboard.”

LizardTech’s first product release for Itanium processor-based systems will be for Microsoft's 64-bit Windows NT® and SCO® UNIX operating systems. Additionally, the LizardTech product will be certified on workstations from a large number of industry-leading vendors including Compaq, HP, IBM and several others, all of whom have announced plans for Itanium™ processor-based systems availability at production.

“Intel works together with companies such as LizardTech to bring industry-leading digital imaging technology to the IA-64 platform,” said Matt Gordon, director of industry marketing for Intel’s Workstation Products Group. “With MrSID, LizardTech is developing the next imaging architecture. Intel is collaborating with LizardTech to ensure the solution and its users take full advantage of IA-64 and the Itanium processor.”

Making imaging work everywhere
MrSID technology is integrated into more than 165 products, including applications from Adobe® and ESRI™. It’s available as a plug-in for popular imaging applications, such as Photoshop® and QuarkXPress™. MrSID is used by millions of professionals for applications ranging from geospatial and medical diagnostic imaging to graphic design and consumer digital photography.

Technology at a glance
LizardTech’s MrSID technology doesn’t just reduce image file sizes, but instead encodes them via wavelet-based algorithms that efficiently reduce file size while protecting vital file information. With MrSID’s lossless encoding, image files don’t lose information yet their size is reduced by a ratio of more than 2:1. The image can be returned to the original image space with the information being identical bit for bit, while providing the ability to instantly serve the image via the Internet at virtually any resolution.
