Sports Fans Worldwide will View America's Cup Racing Live with Virtual Spectator Technology
AUCKLAND, New Zealand, Feb. 17 - As competition for the
world's oldest trophy in sport gets underway in New Zealand this weekend, the
latest in sports technology -- Virtual Spectator -- will deliver live 3D
animated racing coverage via the Internet to thousands of America's Cup fans
around the world.
The showdown between Team New Zealand and Italy's Prada Challenge marks
the first time in the 149-year history of sailing's most prestigious event
that an American team will not compete. And in another first, the racing will
be viewed live on personal computers worldwide via Virtual Spectator. In a
sporting competition that combines the go-fast technology of sleek racing
boats with the skill and talent of the athletes, the latest in sports
technology is being showcased.
Sports fans in 73 countries around the world are following the racing live
via the Internet with Virtual Spectator. The dynamic interactive software
combines the Internet and global positioning (GPS) technologies to bring live
3D animation from the race course to personal computers from Rome to
Antarctica. The software now is downloadable from the Virtual Spectator web
site at http://www.virtualspectator.com. Racing fans can also access Virtual
Spectator via the official America's Cup web site at
http://www.americascup.org.
Virtual Spectator animations are driven by race data transmitted from the
course by each competing yacht, delivering detailed boat and sail images to
the user's personal computer. The software provides on-screen live
performance data, showing position and relative speeds for each racing boat
with the sports fan controlling the camera angles on the course. Real time
weather and commentary and the ability to replay races are some of the
innovative features. Additional features offered for the America's Cup
include race news and commentary in French, Italian, Spanish and English.
This innovative technology will soon be applied to other sports.
Virtual Spectator software for the America's Cup can be purchased over the
Internet for US $9.95. Early subscribers to Virtual Spectator who purchased
the software on CD-Rom at US$69.95 can download an upgrade from the Virtual
Spectator web site at no additional cost. The America's Cup begins February
19 and is a best-of-nine series between Cup Defender Team New Zealand and
Italy's Prada Challenge.
