Innovative new features to be added to geographic information systems metadata tool, SMMS 3oh!
Seattle, Washington, Thursday, January 13, 2000 - RTS Networks USA announces the release of smms 3oh!.1 for February 1, 2000. This release of the SMMS 3oh! metadata editor for the geographic information systems industry will include significantly expanded capability to serve, edit, and manage FGDC metadata.

Wes Hatley, Vice President of Development for the company, outlined the specific capabilities of the new product on December 22, 1999. Three major capabilities were added to smms 3oh!. They include the ability to extend the SMMS interface with custom fields, the addition of support for the NBII biological proficle, and the ability to serve metadata to users through two web interfaces.

The field customization feature will help organizations to capture metadata important for internal management purposes but that may not be needed to be compliant. Users direct business needs are now supported by SMMS with this feature, extending its capabilities beyond the direct needs of the FGDC effort.

A second major feature added is a specific user interface and the fields supporting the NBII biological profile of the FGDC standard. Smms 3oh! can now be used by biological scientists tasked with documenting the qualities of their data. Smms 3oh! also allows users to select predefined information from lists shortening the editing process.

Finally, SMMS has added an administrative interface for the new server product being released. A user can quickly select metadata records for publishing to the Internet through a predesigned web site or through a Z39.50 searchable interface. The combined server and client will save clearinghouse members participating with the FGDC significant operating costs over traditional implementations.
