SGI Provides The Polk Company with Advanced Visualization Technology for the North American International Auto Show
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA (Jan. 6, 2000) - SGI (NYSE: SGI) today
announced it has provided The Polk Company with compute and visualization
technology to support an interactive survey at this year's North American
International Auto Show (NAIAS) opening January 9 at Cobo Hall in Detroit.
SGI and Polk have collaborated to bring a technology boost to the renowned
two-week forum where automotive manufacturers unveil their latest designs.
The survey will poll attendees on everything from favorite concept cars to
purchasing habits. SGI's visual computing power allows participants to watch
their own input affect the overall survey results, which are continually
collected, analyzed and output to the show floor in big-screen 3D fashion
above the polling kiosks.
"NAIAS is a great venue for The Polk Company to showcase its
superior analytical capabilities with complex automotive data,"
said Dave Zaccagnini, vice president, Information Technology,
The Polk Company. "SGI's advanced hardware and software
architecture and its unique ability to visualize large-scale data are
key to Polk's grand strategy to be 'industry smart' and 'tech
savvy'."
Information is collected on the show floor from five kiosks, each containing
three Silicon Graphics® 320 visual workstations and three Silicon Graphics®
1600SW flat panel monitors with touch-screen compatibility. Once
completed, the survey data is compiled and analyzed on-site by The Polk
Technology Center.
The Polk Technology Center is also powered entirely by SGI hardware. Four
SGITM 1400 servers, one Silicon Graphics® 540 visual workstation and 10
Silicon Graphics 320 visual workstations with 10 Silicon Graphics 1600SW
flat panel monitors allow technicians to analyze and prepare data for final
output to the show floor. SGI MineSetTM software, proven to be
extraordinarily useful in solving critical business problems, will convert the data
to 3D images to help quickly identify trends and patterns.
SGI provides a broad range of high-performance computing and advanced
graphics solutions that enable customers to understand and conquer their
toughest computing problems. Headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., with
offices worldwide, the company is located on the Web at www.sgi.com.
