TouchVision to Build On-Demand Transit and Tourism Kiosk Network at Lake Tahoe
SEAL BEACH, Calif., Jan. 14, 2000 - TouchVision Friday
announced that it was selected by the South Shore Transportation Management Association to
develop and deploy a network of 45 interactive touchscreen kiosks at casinos, hotels, ski
resorts and other high traffic locations throughout the South Lake Tahoe area.
The kiosks will be connected to the Tahoe South Shore Coordinated Transit System (CTS)
dispatch center to allow customers to request a ride from the location of the kiosk to any
destination in the South Shore area. Based on the trip request, if a fixed route transit vehicle is
not scheduled for that location, the nearest dial-a-ride van, or private shuttle operator will be
dispatched to pick up the customer.
In addition to the "request a ride" feature, the kiosk will also provide an interactive directory
of things to do, restaurants, merchants and other businesses of interest to visitors. The kiosk
network will use TouchVision's kiosk operating system software and digital mapping
technology. The network is expected to be fully operational before the end of the year.
The federally funded project is a public-private partnership among the public transit agency,
private transportation operators and the area businesses. President Clinton and Vice President
Gore launched the project at the 1997 Environmental Summit. Trapeze Software Group out of
Ontario, Canada is the prime contractor overseeing the design and development of the
Coordinated Transit System.
