ADC Introduces D17 Tools Software
MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 19, 2000 - ADC D17 Tools(TM) enables architects, consultants, and engineers
to save time, money and improve accuracy. ADC (Nasdaq: ADCT; www.adc.com) today announced the release of ADC D17 Tools(TM), an
advanced software package that provides robust yet easy-to-use tools that save time in organizing the
design and construction activities of communications network facilities for buildings. The software,
offered through ADC's Enteraprise line of structured connectivity systems, is based upon the proposed
Division 17 to the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) MasterFormat(TM), a model regularly
used today by architects, consultants, and engineers.
The technology infrastructure is more important than ever for businesses and the proposed Division
17 model provides highly structured, detailed specifications for network infrastructures for everything
from work area outlets to outside plant. With the pending addition of Division 17 and the new ADC
D17 Tools, comprehensive building specifications in a standard format that includes network
requirements are now a reality for architects, consultants, and engineers who design and specify
structured cabling systems.
"Not long ago, simple dial-tone was enough to support businesses," said Jane Livingston, Director,
Enterprise Connectivity Systems, ADC. "Yet the rapid adoption of the Internet and bandwidth-hungry
applications has made the network a mission-critical system for businesses. ADC D17 Tools makes it
easier for architects, consultants, and engineers to more accurately design, estimate, and create specs
for increasingly complex communications networks," said Livingston.
In addition, a majority of change orders today come from network facilities specifications that are
inadequate and/or inaccurate. The result is increased project costs due to the rework of ripping out
walls, creating new paths for conduits, and digging-up freshly-laid asphalt. However, rework and
project cost overruns are greatly reduced with the unique D17 Tools.
"ADC is the only structured cabling manufacturer with a software package that combines CAD
drawing, estimates, and bid specs in the proposed Division 17 format," said Livingston. "D17 Tools
really ties it all together. The industry finally has a means for addressing network facilities requirements in
the same level of detail as for all other buildings systems," said Livingston.
The PC-based ADC D17 Tools Software includes three modules: a drawing and design package
using standard CAD packages, an estimating package, and a package for creating bid specifications.
D17 Tools works seamlessly with AutoCAD 14(R) and AutoCAD LT(R) so that first-time users and
experts alike quickly improve CAD drawing efficiency with little or no training. The easy-to-use
estimating spreadsheets provide detailed cost estimates based upon the proposed Division 17, reducing
turnaround times on estimates while improving accuracy. Finally, users can create professional bid
specifications faster than ever with a comprehensive set of documents organized by categories in the
CSI Page and Section format in the proposed Division 17 model.
