Halfway, Oregon Passes Proclamation to Become Half.com, Oregon for the Year 2000, the First 'Dot-Com' City in America
HALFWAY, Ore., Jan. 20, 2000 - Last Nights' Vote by City Council Puts Its Name-Sake
Web Site Half.com On the Map, Literally
Halfway, Oregon, a picturesque community in Eastern Oregon, today announced that last night it
passed a proclamation to rename the town to Half.com for the year 2000, officially becoming the
world's first dot-com city.
This move follows the councils' ratification from last month to open negotiations with Internet start-up
Half.com.
Yesterday, Half.com unveiled its innovative new person-to-person e-commerce Web site
(www.half.com), giving people an online marketplace to buy and sell high quality, previously owned
consumer entertainment items for at least half off list price.
This new person-to-person e-commerce site provides shoppers with an easy way to purchase
books, CDs, movies and video games at half off, and provides sellers with an easy way to get half their
money back when they are finished with an item. Over one million items are now available for immediate
purchase, with no auctions, bidding, or competition to purchase them.
In exchange for the name change, Half.com, (a.k.a. Halfway) Oregon, will receive significant
exposure for becoming the first "dot-com" city in America, while Half.com puts itself on the map,
literally.
For the year agreement, Half.com is building and hosting a Web site for the town, contracting with
local Web developers for the majority of the work; donating 20 computers to the town elementary
school; providing seed money for existing and future business and economic development, and more.
Half.com also hopes to boost the economy by providing other work opportunities in the near future.
"We are extremely excited to become the first dot-com city in America," said Halfway, Oregon
Mayor Dick Crow. "By changing our name to Half.com, Oregon for a year, our community can greatly
benefit from the success of the Internet. We hope that through this exposure we can develop a number
of cottage industries that will help our economic base grow."
"Just as Halfway, Oregon's ancestors pioneered a new frontier, Half.com is pioneering the
person-to-person e-commerce space," said Josh Kopelman, founder and CEO of Half.com. "We are
thrilled that Halfway has agreed to change its name to Half.com and we look forward to an exciting year
of exploring new territory for both Half.coms."
