Autodesk Unveils Internet-Integrated Solutions Optimized For the Communications, Utilities, Government, and Land Development Industries Company Delivers Software Suite Based on the AutoCAD 2000i Design Platform
SAN RAFAEL, Calif., Jul 10, 2000 -- Autodesk, Inc. (Nasdaq: ADSK), today announced a suite of solutions optimized for the communications, utilities, government, and land development industries that are based on the new AutoCAD(R) 2000i Internet design platform, also announced today (see separate release). The Internet-enhanced solutions include AutoCAD Map(R) 2000i, AutoCAD(R) Land Development Desktop Release 2i, Autodesk(R) Civil Design Release 2i, Autodesk(R) Survey Release 2i, and Autodesk(R) CAD Overlay(R) 2000i.

These new solutions use Web-based features to provide data integration, collaboration, and e-commerce capabilities. Teams can meet online, review designs collectively, publish drawings and design objects on the Web, insert hyperlinks into objects, and access industry-specific content, commerce opportunities, and communities through new Web-based features, AutoCAD Map Today and AutoCAD Land Development Desktop Today. All products based on the AutoCAD 2000i platform leverage Autodesk's new i-drop(TM) Web publishing framework. Based on patent-pending Autodesk(R) technology, i-drop lets users publish design objects within Web pages so that users can drag and drop them directly from the Web and drop them into Autodesk applications.

"IT managers are realizing that they can reap significant business benefits by integrating geospatial IT with enterprise operations," said Joe Astroth, executive vice president of the GIS Solutions Division at Autodesk. "Autodesk is responding with enterprise-integrated solutions that bridge the organization from the field staff to the back office with networked, Internet, and mobile technologies."

Kees Janssen is a research engineer for Bouwdienst Rijkswaterstaat, the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management, in the Netherlands. According to Janssen, "AutoCAD Land Development Desktop 2i and the new Today startup screen and its customizable features will be very useful for my division and a lot of the civil engineering firms we hire for accessing up-to-date information. Autodesk is changing its solutions to the way design is going to be in the future, providing many companies with the direction they need to take to remain competitive. All the software we use should have the Internet capabilities for information access and collaboration that are found in the new AutoCAD Land Development solutions."

The Web is the ultimate link to data integration and collaboration. It enables enterprises to connect and expand to include customers and suppliers. It also provides the ability to conduct purchasing and bidding online. Further integration of data is key for all types of professionals, especially those in the GIS and land development-related industries who need to combine and review data from multiple sources and formats. These professionals have a great need to incorporate many data types into a single system to effectively and efficiently review a site before committing resources and field crews. Autodesk's solutions help them meet that need.

Internet-Enabled Industry Solutions

The complete suite of mapping and land solutions built on the AutoCAD 2000i design platform -- which is Microsoft Windows 2000 compatible -- lets users in the utilities, communications, government, and land development industries visualize, create, and maintain their data, all through an integrated GIS database. AutoCAD Map 2000i is for GIS and mapping professionals whose success depends on maintaining the accuracy of their data, working with large data sets and multiple file formats, and sharing information with colleagues working simultaneously on the same projects. AutoCAD Map 2000i harnesses many of the most powerful aspects of the Web and enables customers to accomplish their work in a more dynamic and flexible way. With import/export technology from the GIS Data Transformer Extension (dtX) now included in AutoCAD Map 2000i and AutoCAD Land Development Desktop Release 2i, customers can continue to easily download and instantly use an ever-increasing selection of data format drivers.

Based on AutoCAD 2000i, the new AutoCAD Land Development solutions are optimized for land development professionals-land planners, civil engineers, and surveyors. AutoCAD Land Development Desktop Release 2i includes all the capabilities and new Internet features of AutoCAD 2000i and AutoCAD Map 2000i in addition to Land Slope Annotation Extension (sX) functionality. sX offers the ability to extract either the elevation or the flow direction and slope directly from a terrain model and then plot an arrow and slope value in the desired direction. This is a critical drafting requirement for any plan in the land development community that requires changes to the terrain. Autodesk is also unveiling AutoCAD Land Development Desktop Today, a feature that links to the Autodesk Point A ( http://pointA.autodesk.com ) land-specific portal. This portal provides users with new project management and messaging capabilities, as well as valuable links to up-to-date content, information, and e-commerce opportunities.

Autodesk Civil Design Release 2i, an AutoCAD Land Development Desktop add-on product, includes a new ActiveX programming interface that provides software developers direct access to profile and cross-section data created within the product. There's also new functionality to automatically adjust a grading object to balance cut and fill by changing the base elevation to match the desired volume, eliminating manual iterations. Customers using Autodesk Survey Release 2i can also link to AutoCAD Land Development Desktop Today to gain access to images, satellite photos, and other sources of information.

Autodesk CAD Overlay 2000i incorporates scanned drawings, maps, aerial photos, and satellite imagery into drawings. New features in CAD Overlay 2000i include enhanced raster conversion and revision, improved productivity and accuracy, and support for MrSID and ECW compressed georeferenced raster formats to improve storage and delivery of extremely large data sets. CAD Overlay 2000i includes a streamlined user interface and integration with new Internet capabilities found in AutoCAD 2000i-based solutions.

Together, these GIS and land development applications work as a powerful solution. They let users -- across the enterprise, throughout the supply chain, and in the field -- leverage the power of the Internet to exchange ideas, retrieve and transmit information, and access critical data. The new Publish to Web feature lets AutoCAD Land Development Desktop and AutoCAD Map users easily publish drawings to the Web for team viewing. Via a Web browser, the AutoCAD Land Development Desktop Today and AutoCAD Map Today features provide access to industry-specific information, up-to-date content, online communities, customer care, and e-commerce through links to the Autodesk Point A portal. The new Meet Now feature allows project team members to deliver electronic presentations and collaborate in real time through hosted meetings on the Internet and intranet. The Hyperlink dialog feature lets users insert hyperlinks into objects.
