Caliper Releases ZIP Code Boundaries for 2000
July 19, 2000, NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS - Caliper Corporation is now shipping current (July 2000) 5-digit ZIP Code boundaries for the entire United States. The up-to-date boundaries are provided on a single Data CD and greatly increase the accuracy of one of the primary building blocks used by people to generate computer maps for business, education, and government administration.

ZIP Code boundaries are constantly changing to keep up with new housing and commercial development. Yet most people using Geographic Information System (GIS) software have ZIP Code data that are seriously out of date, decreasing the reliability and value of the maps they produce.

The new ZIP Code data are supplied in the Caliper compact geographic format, and are compatible with all Caliper software products, including Maptitude®, the company's full-featured Geographic Information System for Windows. Maptitude allows users to present their data on detailed maps, and to overlay these maps with an unlimited variety of demographic and geographic data. It includes a comprehensive database of U.S. streets, which allows users to locate and display addresses anywhere in the country. It also includes a staggering amount of demographic information from the 1990 Census of Population and Housing.

The new ZIP Code Boundaries Data CD is available immediately for $295.

Computer mapping has become an essential tool in business, government, and education. "People are using GIS to make strategic decisions, implement major government programs, and perform cutting-edge research," says Howard Slavin, president of Caliper. "The quality of the maps depends on the quality of the data. This new ZIP Code database will give people one of the best, most comprehensive and useful tools available for creating computer maps that provide accurate answers to their essential questions."

The ZIP Code data are drawn from Dynamap/ZIP, by Geographic Data Technology, Inc. of New Hampshire, which merges information from the Postal Service with its own nationwide street file, producing the most current and comprehensive ZIP Code data now available.

Maptitude is the first full-featured GIS product on the market at a price in line with other mainstream business software – such as spreadsheets and desktop publishing packages. Maptitude retails for $395. It includes massive amounts of worldwide geographic and demographic data in that price, for which competitors in this market routinely charge thousands of dollars extra.

Designed to let users visualize and analyze their business and institutional data geographically, Maptitude comes with a comprehensive library of nationwide and worldwide databases on CD, including complete U.S. street maps, Census tract and other boundaries, and demographics from the 1990 Census. Maptitude has many powerful capabilities, including routing, nationwide address matching, advanced spatial analysis tools, and built-in support for OLE 2.0 and ODBC.

Maptitude also features MapWizard® automatic mapping technology, that lets users create attractive and informative maps with only one or two mouse clicks.

Caliper Corporation, a private company based in Newton, Mass., has been providing software solutions for businesses and institutions worldwide since 1983. Besides Maptitude, the company produces other packaged software, including GIS+®, for the GIS professional, and TransCAD®, a specialized program for transportation professionals. The company also consults extensively with clients on geographic and transportation issues. The ZIP Code Boundaries Data CD is compatible with GIS+ and TransCAD.
