State and Local Government Update: ESRI and Big Blue Join Forces
The following information was derived from a news feature recently posted in the Washington Technology on-line publication. It originally appeared on July 17 in the "State and Local government" section.

WTOnline staff writer William Welsh reports that IBM Corp. is joining forces with ESRI to develop an easy to use GIS for state and local governments. Both companies are expecting to see an increase in software and consulting sales to the GIS industry and feel that a partnership will help to tap into this growing market.

According to ESRI, more than 24,000 state and local governments are currently using the company's software. A market research study conducted by International Data Corp. expects corporate revenues from the GIS industry to double to 2 billion dollars by 2004. The goal of the ESRI, IBM relationship is to capitalize on this growing market.

Welsh notes that ESRI's role in the partnership will be limited to software development, whereas Big Blue's goal is to develop a GIS consulting group, building on the company's success in developing GIS applications tailored to government users in an effort to bolster IBM's share of the growing GIS consulting market.
