Java-based Version of ESRI’s ArcExplorer is Now Available
June 15, 2000-ESRI, the world leader in geographic information system (GIS) software, announced today that ArcExplorer 3, the all-new Java edition of ESRI’s popular GIS data viewer, is now available. ArcExplorer 3-Java Edition is free and can be downloaded from ESRI’s Web site at www.esri.com/arcexplorer.

ArcExplorer is a lightweight data explorer that can be used to query and browse GIS data. ArcExplorer 3-Java Edition extends its utility by offering cross-platform support for both Windows and UNIX operating systems.

ArcExplorer 3 can also be used as a client to ArcIMS 3, ESRI's flagship software for GIS and mapping on the Internet. “More than just a great data explorer, ArcExplorer 3 also provides users with an excellent ArcIMS client,” stated Bernie Szukalski, ESRI’s product manager for ArcExplorer. “It allows users the unique capability to integrate local data with data from an ArcIMS spatial server via the Internet.”

ArcExplorer 3 has the added advantage of being able to work with ArcSDE 8.0.2, the most recent version of ESRI’s Spatial Database Engine. Other features include the ability to label map features with highway shields, pan and zoom through multiple map layers, query spatial and attribute data, create a buffer around selected features, measure distances, locate an address, save and retrieve projects, and print maps. ArcExplorer 3 also offers legends and overview maps.

Because ArcExplorer is freely distributable, it makes an excellent choice for data publishing. Organizations distributing their geographic data can include ArcExplorer directly on their data CDs, providing users with an easy-to-use way to view and query data effectively.

To download ArcExplorer 3-Java Edition, visit www.esri.com/arcexplorer. A complete user’s manual is also available from the same location.

For more than thirty years, ESRI has been the leading developer of geographic information system (GIS) software with more than 300,000 clients worldwide. ESRI also provides consulting, implementation, and technical support services. In addition to its headquarters in California, ESRI has regional offices throughout the United States, international distributors in more than ninety countries, and more than 1,050 business partners. ESRI’s goal is to provide users with comprehensive tools to help them quickly and efficiently manage and use geographic information to make a real difference in the world around them. ESRI can be found on the Web at www.esri.com.
