Autodesk Offers AutoCAD 2000 via Its e-Store to Increase Customer Convenience
San Rafael, California, March 1, 2000—Implementing the first phase of its e-business strategy, Autodesk, Inc., the world's leading provider of PC and Web design software, today announced it is offering customers the ability to purchase its flagship product, AutoCAD® 2000, directly via its e-Store. As part of its e-business strategy, Autodesk is building its e-commerce infrastructure using key partners like Digital River and Internet technologies to properly support channel partners and customers. Autodesk's e-business strategy is part of a larger effort to help transition its substantial customer base to the world of Web-based design.

Digital River, a worldwide leader in e-commerce outsourcing, hosts and manages e-commerce for the e-Store and provides physical and digital delivery of Autodesk's products including AutoCAD 2000. Additionally, Digital River provides marketing and merchandising expertise and customer service.

The e-Store, located at www.autodesk.com/purchase, is currently available for U.S. and Canadian customers, who will benefit from both greater convenience in ordering and faster delivery. Canadian customers will have a separate section devoted solely to their needs that will offer product in Canadian prices and will ship only to Canadian addresses. For customers outside North America, Autodesk is developing additional e-Stores and websites over the next several months tailored to sell and support the products, languages, and currencies specific to the particular country or geographical market it serves. Autodesk already has e-Stores in Great Britain, Ireland, and Singapore that currently sell AutoCAD LT® 2000, Actrix® 2000, and Autodesk® Symbols 2000 software, with AutoCAD 2000 to be available within the next 30–60 days.

"Our mutual customers have expressed an interest in purchasing Autodesk products via the Web. Offering AutoCAD 2000 via the Autodesk e-Store, when coupled with establishing an Autodesk Affiliated Reseller Program and Reseller e-Store guidelines, allows us to respond to our customers' need for convenient ordering and fulfillment," said Greg Malkin, president of Technical Software, a reseller in Cleveland, Ohio. "This also provides Autodesk VARs the opportunity to focus on providing value-added services and expertise to our customers."

"E-commerce is the fastest-growing sector in the world economy," said Mike Sutton, executive vice president of Autodesk's Worldwide Field Organization. "Autodesk's clients, like customers everywhere, are demanding the opportunity to purchase our products directly via the Internet so they can take advantage of the speed and convenience that this powerful distribution channel offers."

The Autodesk® e-Store is ideal for customers who want to purchase a single unit of AutoCAD software or who are more interested in convenience and speed of delivery than in finding the lowest possible price. This typical e-Store customer has little or no need for pre- and post-sales information, on-site training, support, or third-party software. Those services will be available to e-Store customers through their local Authorized Value-Added Reseller.

Autodesk e-Business Strategy
Autodesk is committed to supporting customers and channel partners through innovative, Web-based technologies and services. In terms of products, Autodesk is focusing on creating a transparent mix of desktop and Internet solutions, developing browser-based applications, and creating portals and online communities. These critical initiatives are directed at improving productivity and the communication of design information throughout the customer's organization. In parallel, Autodesk is moving to an e-business model through key Internet partners and technologies to help its channel develop Web-based services and support for their customer base. This effort includes an Autodesk Affiliated Reseller Program and Reseller e-Store guidelines to help resellers quickly establish their e-commerce programs for customers. The Autodesk Affiliated Reseller Program will pair Autodesk e-Store customers with local resellers for further value-added services—making a true virtual Web corporation.

The Autodesk e-Store debuted in 1997 as part of Autodesk's continually evolving distribution strategy. Through the e-Store, the company has successfully sold its general design software solutions, including AutoCAD LT 2000, Actrix 2000, and Autodesk Symbols 2000. In line with Autodesk's expectations for online sales, approximately 4 percent of its North American revenue for all three products is generated via the Autodesk e-Store. Today's announcement marks the first time Autodesk is making one of its more robust design solutions directly available to all its customers. Autodesk plans to make its other desktop solutions available via the e-Store later this year.

Purchasing from the e-Store and Resellers
There are several differences between purchasing from the e-Store and purchasing from a local reseller. Although the Autodesk e-Store accepts only credit cards, Autodesk resellers will continue to offer numerous payment options. In addition, resellers can provide special pricing based on purchase volume and history. Further, resellers can provide extensive presales information and support, as well as other value-added services such as product training, on-site installation, customization, and the integration of third-party products.

Customers who are interested in these value-added services should contact their local Authorized Autodesk Reseller, who can help ensure that customers are purchasing the right solution for their needs. Many resellers are building their own password-protected e-Stores for added customer convenience once the customer and reseller determine the appropriate product choice. Some resellers who will not be establishing their own e-Stores will have links into the Autodesk e-Store.

Autodesk e-Store Pricing
For U.S. customers purchasing from the Autodesk e-Store, AutoCAD 2000 is US$3,195, and upgrades are US$545 and US$745 for customers migrating from AutoCAD Releases 14 and 13, respectively. All customers purchasing AutoCAD from the Autodesk e-Store will receive 60 days of free phone and Web support.
