SiGEM Announces Release of WAAS GPS Receiver for Under US$100
KANATA, ON, March 1- SiGEM Inc. ("SiGEM"), a leading developer of low-power wireless location tracking systems and products, announced today that it has completed a low-cost, high-accuracy GPS module employing Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) correction signals. While standard GPS is only accurate to within approximately 100 meters, SiGEM's new 5610 OEM GPS module produces outstanding accuracy of 3 to 5 meters at significantly lower cost than alternative solutions. SiGEM believes that it is the first company to introduce a low-cost WAAS-enabled modular product line.

WAAS is a safety-critical navigation system that improves the availability, accuracy, and integrity of the standard GPS positioning service. It has been funded by the US Federal Aviation Administration, and is expected to become fully operational by the third quarter of 2000.

In general, high-accuracy GPS solutions rely upon commercial satellite-based delivery systems, marine beacons, or radio modems for the provision of differential correction data. Such techniques require additional hardware, which necessarily adds to the complexity and cost of the systems. Typical costs for these systems range from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars. In comparison, a WAAS-enabled 5610 does not require any external hardware, and for OEM volume orders will cost less than US$100.

"The 5610 breaks new ground by combining WAAS capability with the lowest power consumption we've developed to date - it's our flagship OEM GPS product," said Peter Williams, Chief Operating Officer of SiGEM. "When combined with the outstanding performance of our 3900 GPS antenna we've got an extremely competitive product to launch into the burgeoning U.S. marketplace."

Key Features of the 5610 OEM GPS Module:

  • Enhanced 12 channel GPS architecture.
  • 3 - 5 meter accuracy with WAAS.
  • Extraordinary low power function (<0.25milliamps) makes it ideal for portable and covert applications.
  • Powerful 32-bit RISC processor provides up to 20 MIPS of computing power for user application software.
  • Easy to integrate into embedded systems.
  • 16 parallel I/O lines configurable for custom applications.
  • Data sheets and sample quantities available March 2000 - production volume Q2/2000. Additional features available Q2/2000:
  • Multiple wireless modem support (e.g. GSM, TDMA, CDPD etc).
  • Simple to use script-enabled Geo-fencing.
  • Remote dynamic system configuration.
  • Built-in LCD and keyboard support. Key Features of the 3900 GPS Antenna Subsystem:

  • Extremely low-power operation (<2milliamps at 3 volts for the 3900L).
  • Built-in narrow-band SAW filter.
  • Outstanding noise figure typically 0.8 decibels at 28 decibels gain.
  • High performance at less than 20 degrees to the horizon.
  • Multiple attachment options. The 5610 is available to OEM customers for integration into various applications, including Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL), asset tracking and covert applications. The evolution of the WAAS product line will follow a program of improvements during the next 12 months to coincide with SiGEM's ePing program.

In its current form, the 5610 delivers a critical core technology component for the company's ePing family of low-power, low-cost, 2-way wireless portable location tracking devices, currently under development.

Based in Kanata, Ontario, Canada, SiGEM develops and supplies technologies for the global wireless location-tracking industry. SiGEM's patented products utilize GPS and wireless technologies to provide cost effective, low-power, 2-way wireless location tracking solutions, serving several market applications, including people and asset tracking. The Company maintains a high level of Research & Development expertise in wireless communication protocols, silicon and software with a focus on providing high quality solutions. SiGEM continues development of its core ePing wireless tracking solution for enterprise and consumer tracking applications. The common shares of SiGEM trade on the Canadian Dealing Network under the trading symbol "SGEM", with 14,145,577 common shares outstanding.
