ESRI Leads the Way in the Growing GIS Software Market
Redlands, California-ESRI today announced the results of a recent study, titled Geographic Information Systems Markets and Opportunities, that highlighted ESRI as the world's leading geographic information system (GIS) software company.
The annual study is published by Daratech, Inc., a market research firm based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
"We at ESRI are proud of the results of the study because we believe they not only reflect the hard work of our employees but also demonstrate the significant contributions of our user community, which are at the core of all our software development efforts," says Jack Dangermond, president, ESRI. "By working with users in a number of industries, we continue to develop crosscutting and generic software tools and solutions that have significant impact on the integration of knowledge now and in the years to come."
ESRI commanded 35.1 percent of the total worldwide GIS software market in 1999 with nearly 300 million dollars in software revenues. For the GIS market as a whole, the total revenues generated in GIS software sales rose to 845 million dollars in 1999, a healthy 12.8 percent increase over the previous year.
ESRI led the way in a number of key GIS software markets. ESRI captured 72 percent of the GIS software market in research and education and also held 59 percent of the GIS software market for the public sector. In addition, the company maintained 49 percent of the transportation GIS software market and 50 percent of the GIS software market for marketing and sales. The company demonstrated a strong presence in the GIS software market for workstations by capturing 57 percent of the market.
ESRI garnered 40 percent of worldwide core business, which includes hardware, software, and services, for the private sector marketing and sales industry.
"Over the past three years, ESRI has worked vigorously to rewrite its key software platform using IT-focused standard technologies," adds Dangermond. "ESRI has reengineered ArcInfo 8 and ArcIMS to be based on a new object-component architecture and using a host of industry or government standards such as SQL, TCP/IP, HTTP, XML, CORBA, COM, Java, ISO, and C++. We feel this embracing of a standards-based strategy will have a powerful impact on the dissemination of GIS throughout the software industry."
