Ann Arbor Selects Extreme Networks for its Immediate Switching Infrastructure and Future Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) Needs
  • Extreme Networks Provides the City of Ann Arbor, Michigan With Performance And Scalability Required for High-Traffic Network

SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 8 -- Extreme Networks' (Nasdaq: EXTR) today announced that the City of Ann Arbor, Michigan has chosen its award-winning switching solutions for its citywide network. The City of Ann Arbor is relying on Extreme Networks' technology to serve all of its municipal offices with the required high performance to allow for such bandwidth-intensive applications as detailed mapping tools and financial applications.

"Extreme Networks delivered significant price/performance over other vendors, and our choice was clear," said E. Brian Morey, Network Administrator for the city. "Since installing the Extreme Networks solution, we've seen a tremendous reduction in calls to the helpdesk relating to network performance -- these kinds of calls dropped from over 70 percent down to less than five percent. The new network immediately met our expectations, and we look forward to working with Extreme Networks on further infrastructure improvements. We know Extreme Networks' technology can support us in our growth, which we expect to be significant throughout the next decade."

The seamless connectivity provided by the Extreme Networks solution has enabled immediate access by civic employees to the city's Geographical Information System (GIS) database, an image-intensive database of city mapping information. This large database is accessed by many departments within the city, and includes street, land and infrastructure information, such as the location of city water pipes, parcel and terrain data, and drainage systems. It is crucial for most departments, such as engineering and transportation, to have instantaneous access to this information.

"We saw immediate improvements in the GIS data serving, and the network problem we had before has been removed," said Merle Johnson, GIS Analyst for the city. "Where before only a few people could use the database, now entire departments can use the system at one time, with no performance degradation."

In addition to citing Extreme Networks' superior performance, low cost of ownership, and scalability, Morey cited that Extreme Networks' products "are easy to configure and support, and the management tools are intuitive."

"The scalability, cost-effectiveness and seamless connectivity provided by Extreme Networks' solutions will enable the development of new applications and the growth of Ann Arbor's network and evolving MAN," said George Prodan, vice president of worldwide marketing for Extreme Networks. "The installation is further proof that Ethernet is the technology of choice for next-generation gigabit MANs. Extreme Networks' switching solutions enable customers like the City of Ann Arbor to leverage Ethernet's simplicity and cost-effectiveness to deploy networks that can help them be more efficient in today's Internet economy."
