Cerro Grande Wild Fire
Cerro Grande Wild Fire - Bandelier National Monument, near Los Alamos. 191 residences, ten commercial buildings, and 12 outbuildings were destroyed by the fire. Firefighters are working on the southeast portion of the fire to prevent it from spreading toward the community of White Rock. The fire spotted across Santa Clara Canyon yesterday and began to make a significant run to the north. By mid-afternoon, fire activity diminished due to thick smoke shading the fuels.

Cause: Prescribed fire ignited 5/04, 300 acres
Location: Los Alamos area, NM
Fire personnel: 39 crews, 7 helicopters, 32 engines. Total 1,268 personnel
Containment: No estimate of containment
Expected Containment: Unknown
Size: 42,232 acres
Vegetation type: Mixed Conifer, Ponderosa pine, and Grass

CURRENT ACTIVITY:

Crews and air support continue to assist Los Alamos National Labs (LANL) fire personnel. White Rock evacuees have been allowed to return to their homes. The spot fires reported north of Santa Clara Canyon yesterday have been contained and and no new spots were discovered. Fire continues to move into steeper, upper Santa Clara Canyon with high potential for spotting north of the canyon.

Crews in the north will continue to strengthen lines in anticipation of predicted wind event on Tuesday. Crews in the south will continue to work on the west flank and with LANL fire personnel.
