Intergraph Corporation and Global Research and Development
Company Inc. Sign Agreement to Accelerate Shipbuilding Software Development
HUNTSVILLE, Ala., - Nov. 3, 2000--Intergraph Corporation (Nasdaq:INGR) and the Global Research and
Development Company Inc. (GRAD) consortium have signed an agreement to accelerate the delivery of Global Shipbuilding Computer
Aided Design (GSCAD) software. The agreement restructures previous arrangements and continues the parties' combined commitment to
develop and deploy advanced, integrated ship design and life cycle management software for use by worldwide naval and commercial
shipbuilding industries.
The project contains an accelerated schedule and allows each party to concentrate development resources on its respective area of
expertise. Intergraph will continue to provide the core software platform for GSCAD, including 3D and 2D components and integration
mechanisms, collectively known as "Jupiter" technology. Intergraph will focus development resources on software for outfitting, including
applications for the engineering and design of piping, instrumentation, electrical and related shipboard subsystems.
GRAD will focus on ship structure, including development of applications for molded forms, structural detailing and automated
manufacturing. GRAD also will finalize integration and manage user testing of GSCAD to enable rapid certification for commercial use.
With GRAD support, Intergraph will fully own, market, support, maintain and further develop the software.
Francis B. Brake, vice president and chief operating officer, GRAD, said, "GRAD's commitment to proceed with GSCAD is a result of
successful pilot implementations by the GRAD consortium shipbuilders. We're convinced that GSCAD can create significant competitive
advantage and will redefine the way ships are designed and built."
David Stinson, president, Intergraph Process & Building Solutions, said, "The agreement is a validation of Intergraph's advanced 3D, 2D
and SmartPlant software technology and represents both partners' commitment to field advanced software for shipbuilding. The resulting
GSCAD will provide Intergraph's current shipbuilding customers with a technology refreshment path. It will also provide the U.S. Navy,
military and other commercial shipbuilders with a strategic alternative to previous-generation shipbuilding software now in use."
GSCAD to Improve Design, Construction and Life Cycle Support Processes
Aimed at significantly reducing cost and schedules, GSCAD is an integrated approach to ship engineering, design, construction, life cycle
management and marine e-business. GSCAD engineering analysis, planning and design tools are built on a "smart product model" and an
integrated infrastructure that accesses and shares real-time information which supports effective business decisions. The software addresses
all facets of shipbuilding and provides a framework for marine e-business, beginning at conceptual design through the extended supply chain
and continuing throughout the life of the ship.
