Firepad Releases First Photo-sharing Technology for
Palm OS Handhelds; FirePublisher Deployments Let Graphics-Rich Web Firms
Grow Beyond the Desktop
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Nov. 7, 2000--Firepad, Inc. Tuesday
announced the release of the world's first wireless photo sharing system for Palm OS(R) handhelds.
Based on the company's award-winning FireViewer(TM) client and newly released FirePublisher(TM)
server, the system allows uploaded photos to be accessed on demand from Palm(TM) devices
equipped with wireless service. The company is working with several leading photo sharing websites to
make their gallery images displayable on Palm OS devices.
Users of wireless Palm devices, such as Palm V units equipped with service from OmniSky or
GoAmerica, can visit FireViewer.com(TM) to experience handheld wireless photo sharing from a
demonstration implementation of FirePublisher. FireViewer, which can be downloaded from
http://www.firepad.com/products/viewer/download.html, is required to enable the Palm device for
photo sharing. Trial versions of the Windows NT-based FirePublisher server can be downloaded from
http://www.firepad.com/products/fpublisher/download.html.
"The striking thing about our photo sharing initiative was the ease of implementation," said Kenneth J.
Marshall, president and chief operating officer of Firepad. "We completed the demo system in just two
days, running it on an unmodified FirePublisher server, and using standard HTML and CGI.
Desktop-centric web firms are pleasantly surprised to learn that rich content can be delivered to
wireless handhelds so quickly and easily. The photo sharing demo at FireViewer.com provides a
glimpse into the power, flexibility and simplicity of FirePublisher."
The current version of FireViewer supports text; hyperlinks; and large, two-dimensional graphics on
the Palm, and has more than 385,000 downloads to date, making it one of the top 10 all-time
downloads for the platform. Earlier this year, Firepad demonstrated an upcoming version of FireViewer
that also supports live streaming color video. Last month, Firepad announced that it licensed the
Adobe(R) PDF library from Adobe Systems Incorporated (NASDAQ: ADBE), which will enable
FireViewer to intelligently display PDF documents.
Firepad(TM) will showcase the newest rich content handheld technologies next week at the Palm,
Inc. pavilion at COMDEX/Fall 2000, from November 13-17 in Las Vegas.
