GRASS growing on Mac OS X
Cartographer Jeshua Lacock and owner of Sierra Maps and 3D Topo Maps says
he has successfully compiled his open-source GIS (Geographical Information
System) GRASS 5.0 beta 8 for the Mac OS X Public Beta.
"The X-Windows based GUI [graphical user interface] works and all," he says.
"This proves beyond a shadow of a doubt how powerful and compatible Mac OS X
is. If GRASS can be compiled, just about any UNIX code under the sun will run on
OS X.
GRASS, in development for over 18 years, is a "Geographic Resources Analysis
Support System." It's used for data management, image processing, graphics
production, spatial modeling, and visualization of several types of data. Originally
written by the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratories
(USA-CERL) branch of the US Army Corp of Engineers as a tool for land
management and environmental planning by the military, GRASS has evolved into a
utility with a wide range of applications in many different areas of scientific research.
It's currently used in academic and commercial settings around the world, as well as
many governmental agencies including NASA, NOAA, USDA, the National Park
Service, the U.S. Census Bureau, USGS, and many environmental consulting
companies.
For more information or to download the binaries, go to the
GRASS home page.
You can order the Mac OS X Public Beta for US$30 at the
Apple Store.
