Softco's StanConvert 4 helps in bringing about universality in CAD setups

StanConvert - Enterprise CAD StandardsTranslator for AutoCAD

Barrie Mathews, in charge of product design and engineering at Softco Engineering Systems Inc. predicts that Softco's StanConvert Rel. 4, AutoCAD 2000 Standards Translation software will bring about universality in AutoCAD coding systems within 5 years.

According to Barrie, StanConvert is the catalyst for sure success in producing universal classification of CAD objects for industry. Using the StanConvert Translation Protocol, coding systems that differ in the classifications used are flagged for evaluation by your associates when you exchange drawings with them.

For example, where one office may use a layer named C-Comm for both overhead and underground communication objects, another office in the same industry may use separate layers, such as C-Comm-Ovhd and C-Comm-Undr. That is, one of the systems uses a more generic or specific classification.

Using the StanConvert Protocol, layers that are more generic or more specific in one system than the other are flagged with temporary prefix codes in front of the name to identify the differences. When drawings are converted and shipped to another office, temporary "D*_" and "C*_" prefixes label the layers that contain more specific objects in the oposing systems and prevent more specific objects from being moved to a generic layer. The same principle is also applied for linetypes, colors, plotstyle names, and symbol names.

By communicating the differences, CAD Managers will make informed decisions on whether it makes sense to change their standard to the more specific classifications or if such classifications are really needed. In this way, universal classification systems will evolve to the best common denominator in ever widening circles as more firms use StanConvert to translate drawings for shipping to other offices.

StanConvert 4 is an enterprise solution having source files that are be centrally controlled. It features a new interface to select drawing folders for batch processing entire libraries of old drawings to the U.S. National CAD Standard or any alternate standards of setup. For symbol and detail libraries, you can either process all the drawings in place, or save them to a target folder and rename them at the same time. Logfiles are written to each save location recording the translation setup used, conversion direction, and the name of each drawing processed.

All AutoCAD 2000 features are supported, including translation of named plotstyles and application of named plotstyles and lineweight to R14 drawings according to color when opened in AutoCAD 2000. There are purging options for all modules, and the ability to include or exclude x-ref layer properties and standards applied by entity inside blocks.

The StanConvert 4 online help gives you step by step instructions on how to make accurate translations and over time, bring about universal classification of CAD objects that are determined workable by the industry itself. You can download a full working demo today at www.softcosys.com.
