National Geographic's MapMachine Receives Top Marks

Redlands, California-ESRI, the leading developer of geographic information system (GIS) software, announces that the National Geographic Society's MapMachine, built using ESRI's ArcIMS software, has been rated "Spectacular!" and awarded five stars in Barbara J. Feldman's November 1, 2000, syndicated newspaper column, "Surfing the Net with Kids." The column is designed to provide a guide to children's educational resources available on the Internet. It appears in many newspapers throughout the United States including the San Diego Union-Tribune, Indianapolis Star News, Richmond Times-Dispatch, Contra Costa Times, and Winston-Salem Journal. MapMachine uses ArcIMS to present maps via the Internet ranging from satellite imagery to street maps, to help people better visualize and understand the world around them. An online version of the MapMachine review is available at www.surfnetkids.com/maps.htm. MapMachine is located at www.nationalgeographic.com/maps.

The National Geographic Society is the world's largest nonprofit scientific and educational organization. The 112-year-old society reflects the world through magazines, books, maps, television, and interactive media. National Geographic magazine, the official journal of the society, has a circulation of about 10 million and is read in every country in the world. The National Geographic Channel, a daily cable network, will launch in the United States in January 2001. Abroad, the channel is received by 80 million subscribers, in 15 languages, in 110 countries. The society has funded more than 6,500 scientific research projects and supports an education program combating geographic illiteracy.

For more than 30 years, ESRI has been the leading developer of geographic information system (GIS) software with more than 300,000 clients worldwide. ESRI also provides consulting, implementation, and technical support services. In addition to its headquarters in California, ESRI has regional offices throughout the United States, international distributors in more than 90 countries, and more than 1,050 business partners. ESRI's goal is to provide users with comprehensive tools to help them quickly and efficiently manage and use geographic information to make a real difference in the world around them.
