Intergraph Introduces Long Term Transaction Workflows for GeoMedia and
Oracle8i
New industry product integrates GeoMedia and Oracle Workspace Manager
Technology
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 2, 2000 - Oracle Open World - Intergraph Mapping and GIS
Solutions, a division of Intergraph Corporation , today
introduced long term transaction (LTT) workflows capability for GeoMedia(R)
and Oracle8i(TM) with a new industry product, GeoMedia Transaction Manager.
GeoMedia Transaction Manager integrates GeoMedia, Oracle Spatial, and the
Oracle Workspace Manager feature of the Oracle database to provide a robust
LTT management system that supports the capture and maintenance of
geospatial data in a multi-user environment. Organizations, such as
government and transportation agencies, that have multiple users building
and maintaining geospatial data models within a department or across
departments will especially benefit from this new product. With GeoMedia
Transaction Manager, these organizations can manage the lifecycle of data
changes while safeguarding the integrity and validity of their valuable
enterprise geospatial information. This industry product is being previewed
at the Intergraph kiosk in the Oracle Partner Pavilion this week at Oracle
OpenWorld(R) in San Francisco, October 1-6.
GeoMedia Transaction Manager provides unique "Just-in-Time Locking"
Unlike most traditional long term transaction approaches, GeoMedia
Transaction Manager provides a unique "Just-in-Time Locking" capability
using the Oracle Workspace Manager feature of the Oracle database. Records
are locked at the time of the edit instead of requiring a pre-extract
processing step as done in traditional long term transaction management
workflows. As a result, geospatial features are not artificially locked just
because of their proximity to a project area. This allows multiple users to
work on projects in the same geographic area, which maximizes communication
during collaborative projects, minimizes project conflicts, and saves time
and money.
Other key capabilities of GeoMedia Transaction Manager that leverage the
capabilities in Oracle Workspace Manager include:
- Managing Change - Geospatial data capture and editing are made in a long
term transaction mode during which the corresponding feature records are
locked to prevent conflicting changes from other users. Once edits have been
approved, they can be posted to the database, versioned, and unlocked for
subsequent editing.
- Collaborating on Projects - Users can see the changes made by others
during the design/editing sessions. For example, on collaborative projects
involving people in multiple departments or agencies, a new right-of-way
project could have one department focused on water, one on wastewater/
drainage, one on right of way, one on signage, and one on utilities. Users
can view the progress of the changes made by the others prior to any of the
changes being committed to the data model.
- Providing Temporal History - The product maintains a full temporal history
of the data. This enables users to query the system to show views of the
geospatial data model at particular points in time. For example, persons
responsible for parcel management can view and analyze the history of a
particular area over the past 10 years. They can easily create map views of
the data reflecting different time intervals with each interval symbolized
to portray the changes.
Customers enthusiastic about LTT capabilities
The city of Edmonton in Alberta, Canada is enthusiastic about GeoMedia
Transaction Manager. The City is currently in the process of implementing a
Spatial Land Inventory Management (SLIM) system. SLIM uses Intergraph's
GeoMedia technology and Oracle Spatial. The goal of SLIM is to provide a
true enterprise approach for the creation, maintenance, and use of spatial
information within the City of Edmonton.
Joni Mines, director of Land Information Systems for the City of Edmonton,
comments, "After previewing GeoMedia Transaction Manager, I am confident
that this software will meet our requirements for deploying a
non-proprietary and open information infrastructure in our enterprise data
management environment. The fact that GeoMedia Transaction Manager is built
upon Oracle Workspace Manager is of major significance. All of our land
applications will now access and update our Oracle data - both spatial and
non-spatial - through the exact same open, non-proprietary long transaction
management and versioning component. We are extremely excited about the
benefits we stand to gain when the deployment of GeoMedia Transaction
Manager with Oracle Spatial and Oracle Workspace Manager is completed. By
using these products, we will be able to manage historical spatial data as
easily as we manage our non-spatial data. That will be a huge step forward
for us."
Intergraph's GeoMedia software has supported Oracle Spatial since its
introduction as part of the company's initiative to integrate geospatial
information into the IT mainstream. According to Preetha Pulusani, executive
vice president of Intergraph Mapping and GIS Solutions, "Our support of
Oracle Workspace Manager technology is a natural fit with our strategy of
developing and delivering solutions based on open industry standards. Long
term transaction management is critical in many geospatial workflows, and
for many of our customers. GeoMedia Transaction Manager builds on the Oracle
database technology to provide the full solution needed for our users."
"Collaboration is critical to successful business applications. GeoMedia's
open architecture is a great match with our Oracle Workspace Manager
technology," said Steve Hagan, vice president of development, server
technologies at Oracle Corporation. "Through the use of Workspace Manager
features, GeoMedia Transaction Manager enables collaborative, multi-user
access and sharing of geospatial information across the customer's
enterprise."
