MapInfo Joins Oracle's Wireless Partner Initiative; MapInfo's Mobile Location Suite Delivers Location Services to the Field on Oracle9i Application Server Wireless Edition

TROY, N.Y., Oct. 17, 2000--MapInfo Corporation (NASDAQ:MAPS) today announced it has joined Oracle's (NASDAQ:ORCL) Wireless Partner Initiative. MapInfo is among the first of Oracle's partner companies to join this initiative, enabling organizations to deliver fast, powerful, efficient location services to the field, via PDAs, wireless phones, handheld computers and standard phones connected to interactive voice recognition systems. MapInfo's Mobile Location Suite integrates mapping, geocoding, routing and content, providing the most accurate and comprehensive means of interpreting and responding to requests for location services such as "find the nearest," "get addresses" and "provide driving directions."

"Oracle9i Application Server Wireless Edition is the leading development and deployment platform for the next generation wireless services that enable wireless users to access information where and when they need it," said Thomas Kurian, vice president, E-business, Oracle. "The integration of MapInfo products with Oracle9i AS Wireless Edition's location-based services, will provide our customers with the ability to deliver location-aware applications to wireless users."

"Empowering business users with wireless services is becoming more critical as the wireless revolution takes off," said Brian Lantz, vice president, business and sales development at MapInfo. "By delivering the power of real-time, location-based services to the field via MapInfo's Mobile Location Suite on Oracle9i Application Server Wireless Edition, organizations can resolve problems faster, improve services and build customer loyalty and satisfaction."

Components of the Mobile Location Suite for the development of wireless Web services include:

-- MapInfo(R)MapXtreme(R)100 % Java(TM)Edition server, which allows for the creation of maps in a variety of formats (GIF, PNG and WBMP);

-- MapInfo(R) MapXtend(TM), a robust developer tool that allows for the delivery of scalable location-based mapping applications to wireless handheld devices;

-- MapInfo(R) MapMarker(R) J Server, which converts street addresses to exact latitude and longitude pairs to pinpoint locations on interactive maps; and,

-- MapInfo(R) MapInsight(TM), which offers users a fast and efficient way to rank and sort customer data based on location.

Oracle recently launched its Oracle Wireless Partner Initiative to assist independent software vendors (ISVs), application service providers (ASPs) and system integrators (SIs) deploy wireless portals and Internet applications and services. Oracle's wireless Internet software includes its market-leading Oracle9i AS Wireless Edition and a set of wireless development tools. The new initiative is part of the Oracle Partner Program.
