B.C. Ministry of Forests honoured at technology conference -- Crown Lands Registry Services recognized as well

Kelowna, BC - In recognition of their leadership role and innovative use of geographic information system (GIS), the Ministry of Forest - Penticton Forest District, was presented with an Award of Excellence earlier today.

The presentation by ESRI Canada, the leading GIS provider in Canada, took place during the fourth annual ESRI Regional User Conference (ERUC) - Interior British Columbia Region. More than 100 GIS professionals attended the conference at the Grand Okanagan Lakefront Resort and Conference Centre in Kelowna.

"The Award of Excellence is going to a very deserving organization that is making tremendous contributions to GIS in the forestry industry," said Doug Stewart, manager, ESRI Canada - Pacific Region. "The Penticton Forest District has made tremendous strides integrating GIS with the Land Resource Management Plan (LRMP), the community-based land management system that includes First Nations, Environmental, Municipal and Forestry organizations, thereby enhancing the decision making process."

The Penticton Forest District worked with GIS technology to become the first group to implement ESRI's Spatial Database and web-based technologies for forestry decision support. In addition, the District is well on its way to providing free data and system access to external parties, further enabling the decision making process within the LRMP.

ESRI Canada's Awards of Excellence are presented annually to organizations or individuals across Canada for their outstanding achievement in the application of geographic information systems technology. Dwaine Froment, account manager, ESRI Canada - Pacific Region, joined Mr. Stewart to present the award.
