OrbView Cities Plus, based on ISTAR's high resolution aerial imagery, provides
exceptional mapping accuracy.
(Dulles, VA, 4 April 2001) - Orbital Imaging Corporation (ORBIMAGE), a leading
global provider of Earth imagery products and services, today announced a new
digital imagery product line called OrbView Cities Plus. This new imagery is an
extension of ORBIMAGE's existing OrbView Cities program comprised of one-meter
resolution digital imagery of major urban areas around the world. The key
enhancement of OrbView Cities Plus imagery is its very high one-meter
geo-location accuracy for mapping applications. With extremely accurate feature
locations, this new imagery is valuable as a base data layer for a variety of
GIS applications in the local government, utility, telecommunications and the
architecture/engineering/construction marketplaces.
"OrbView Cities Plus is an exciting new product for us," said Mark Pastrone,
ORBIMAGE Vice President, Commercial Sales and Marketing. "This new imagery has
unprecedented mapping accuracy that is valuable for many customers, including
local governments and utility companies as well as architects and civil
engineers involved in construction planning."
Now available as OrbView Cities Plus at www.orbimage.com, are six major U.S.
cities, including over 13,500 square miles in California. Imagery of additional
cities is being added continuously, with the plan to have over 50 major U.S.
cities imaged, processed and ready for sale by the end of 2001.
OrbView Cities Plus has a one-meter spatial resolution and is orthorectified to
a one meter geolocation accuracy which is compatible with 1:1,200 scale mapping
(National Mapping Accuracy Standard). The imagery is acquired with a 12-bit
digital camera system that produces true orthoimages with excellent clarity and
no building lean. OrbView Cities Plus is available in the standard GeoTiFF
format ready for immediate use in off-the-shelf GIS software packages.
The OrbView Cities Plus imagery is being acquired and processed by ISTAR,
ORBIMAGE's strategic partner. ISTAR uses an innovative aerial imaging system,
the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC), which was developed jointly with the
German Space Agency (DLR). The HRSC digital scanner acquires multiple
stereoscopic images of each point on the ground during a single pass, allowing
for a cost-effective process that ensures the highest geometric accuracy.
Laurent Renouard, Executive Vice-President of ISTAR Americas, commented: "This
new product line and our expanded partnership with ORBIMAGE open up excellent
opportunities for a widespread use of high resolution imagery in the North
American marketplace."
ORBIMAGE is a leading global provider of Earth imagery products and services,
with a planned constellation of five digital remote sensing satellites. The
company currently operates the OrbView-1 atmospheric imaging satellite (launched
in 1995), the OrbView-2 ocean and land multispectral imaging satellite (launched
in 1997), and a worldwide integrated image receiving, processing and
distribution network. Currently under development, ORBIMAGE's OrbView-3 and
OrbView-4 high-resolution satellites will offer one-meter panchromatic and
four-meter multispectral digital imagery. OrbView-4 will also offer the world's
first commercial hyperspectral satellite imagery. ORBIMAGE is also the U.S.
distributor of imagery from the Canadian RADARSAT-2 satellite.
ORBIMAGE currently offers one-meter high-resolution panchromatic imagery of
major U.S. and non-U.S. urban areas through its OrbView Cities catalog,
available at http://www.orbimage.com. In addition, ORBIMAGE distributes imagery
from SPOT Image, Canada's RADARSAT-1 satellite and Russia's SPIN-2 satellite.
ORBIMAGE also offers the SeaStar Pro Fisheries Information Service, which
provides fish finding maps derived from OrbView-2 satellite imagery of the
world's oceans to fishing customers worldwide.
ISTAR is a premier cartography company, specializing in the production of
digital geographic databases specifically created for the design, optimization
and expansion of wireless telecommunication networks. ISTAR has processed
digitized maps and satellite and aerial images covering more than 15,000,000 sq.
km of the Earth's surface. ISTAR's online HotSpots catalog currently contains
2000 cities and regions in 100 countries, and is updated daily. Since 1999,
ISTAR has already produced 0.25cm to 1m resolution imagery for 80 cities around
the world -- www.istar.com.
