MapInfo Augments Market Analysis Solutions with Census 2000 Data

MapInfo Supplements, Aggregates and Filters Census Data for Improved Market and Customer Analysis

TROY, NY--April 17, 2001--MapInfo Corporation (Nasdaq: MAPS) today announced its plans for integrating Census 2000 data into its core market analysis solutions. MapInfo® TargetPro® v3.6 will be the first MapInfo solution to utilize the newly released data by incorporating a full set of estimates based on corrected state totals. MapInfo adds tremendous value to the Census data through annual updates, the creation of additional modeled databases and the integration of the data into MapInfo’s powerful, easy-to-use business intelligence solutions.

"Our decisions regarding merchandising, advertising and especially site selection depend on accurate and up-to-date demographic data. MapInfo’s incorporation of the 2000 Census data into TargetPro will allow us to capitalize on the myriad demographic changes that took place in the United States over the past decade," said Chris Kochan, market research manager at Rack Room Shoes. "Using the 2000 Census data in our sales forecasting model, we expect to gain a competitive advantage in our market strategy and site selection decision-making process."

"What is exciting about the Census is that it gives companies like MapInfo the ability to validate our estimates and set a base line for future analysis," said Jon Winslow, CRM market director at MapInfo. "It is also extremely interesting to see the surprising new trends."

For example, it was expected that the Hispanic population would increase dramatically in places like Texas, Florida and California. However, the new Census tells us that the Hispanic population is also growing quickly in places like suburban Georgia and Idaho. The Hispanic population of Gainesville, GA, is nearly 31 percent of the entire population. Twenty-nine percent of Dalton, GA, and 35 percent of West Clark, ID, are also Hispanic according to the new Census data. These statistics indicate a significant growth in this demographic from the 1990 percentages of 17, 3 and 10 percent respectively.

MapInfo’s release of TargetPro v3.6, planned for April 2001, will contain demographic estimates and projections, on items such as population, households, median income and age, influenced by the recently available Census information. These data are packaged with a variety of other Census-based marketing databases to provide a robust market and customer analysis solution used by marketing organizations around the world. MapInfo will also make tabular data from the Census available in MapInfo’s native format as the new Census data is released.
