Columbus, OH--TRANSMAP Corporation, a leading roadway GIS and asset management systems developer, recently delivered roadway data and images as part of the statewide centerline data development effort underway for the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Working in partnership with Parsons Brinckerhoff, the country's largest transportation engineering firm, TRANSMAP collected Roadtrack data on almost 14,000 miles of roadway in the northern districts of the Commonwealth. TRANSMAP then developed a highly accurate, three-dimensional road centerline basemap for every county in the districts surveyed. All of this was accomplished in less than 7 months - 11 months ahead of schedule!
Using vans equipped with three digital cameras, a Global Positional System (GPS) receiver, and an inertial navigation system, TRANSMAP field engineers traveled roads in thirty-four counties, taking color digital photographs and collecting GPS data, used to develop the basemap for the road network. The roads were then merged with VDOT's existing roadway data to maintain data integrity. Potential use of the digital images will be to rate pavement condition on VDOT's secondary highway system.
"The DOT will access a variety of information for highway maintenance and construction every day," explains Dr. Kurt Novak, TRANSMAP president. "The digital images and our accurate centerline map make it easier for their engineers and technicians to have accurate information at their fingertips instead of making countless, time-consuming field visits to gather and verify infrastructure information."
