Spatial Information Industry Boosted By Commonwealth Support

Minister for Industry, Science and Resources, Senator Nick Minchin, today said the offer of a Commonwealth grant to an Australian spatial information industry consortium will boost the Government’s Spatial Information Industry Action Agenda.

The $618 754 grant was offered to Spatial Australia, Spatial Education Australia, Consulting Surveyors Australia and MapInfo Australia (Pty) Ltd under the Government’s Technology Diffusion Program. The grant will assist the consortium to facilitate the transfer of new technologies to Australian industry and create a highly skilled and innovative workforce.

The spatial information industry covers remote sensing, photogrammetry, mapping, surveying, land administration and geographic information systems. It provides business and industry with the facilities to access data and resources.

The consortium represents a wide cross-section of the spatial information industry. The funded project, when complete, will facilitate the easy transfer of innovative and enabling technologies from research and development organisations to industry service providers.

“The Commonwealth Government acknowledged the industry’s importance to the Australian economy when it established the Spatial Information Industry Action Agenda last year,” Senator Minchin said. “This partnership between the industry and the Commonwealth Government, will help facilitate its future growth.

“The Government believes the spatial information industry has the potential to generate significant economic benefits given its strong knowledge-based foundation and high value-added component.

“The industry is still developing but international market studies show that world-wide expenditure on spatial information is already about $US 17 billion a year and growing at a rate of 20 per cent.”

In congratulating the industry on the grant offer, Senator Minchin said the Action Agenda process allowed industry and Government to work together to strengthen the capacity of Australian industries to compete globally.

“Like all the other Action Agenda initiatives put in place by the Government, the Spatial Information Industry Action Agenda helps to identify impediments to growth in specific sectors of the industry and remove them. It also helps the industry to identify opportunities and then take advantage of them.

“The Action Agendas are driven by the industry and facilitated by Government,” Senator Minchin said. “They are part of a comprehensive set of measures the Government has put in place to help Australian Industry compete globally.

“Earlier this year the Prime Minister issued the innovation statement Backing Australia’s Ability, which will provide a further $2.9 billion of Commonwealth investment in Australia’s research abilities and skills. It underscores the Government’s commitment to the future growth of an innovative Australian economy.”
