Redlands, California-ESRI, the leader in geographic information system (GIS)
software, is pleased to announce the release of ArcView 8.1. ArcView is the world’s
most popular desktop GIS and mapping software, with more than 500,000 copies in use
worldwide. ArcView provides geographic data visualization, query, analysis, and
integration capabilities along with the ability to create and edit geographic data.
ArcView 8.1 is the most significant release in the history of ArcView. ESRI built
ArcView 8.1 with a completely new architecture, providing a significantly enhanced user
experience, based on current standards in the information technology (IT) arena.
ArcView 8.1 maintains the base functionality of ArcView GIS 3.x and adds a host of
improvements. New features include a catalog for browsing and managing data, on-the-
fly coordinate and datum projection, metadata creation, customization with built-in
Visual Basic for Applications, new geographic editing tools, support for static annotation,
enhanced cartographic tools, and much more.
ArcView 8.1 is Internet enabled, allowing the integration of Internet map data with a
user’s local data. ArcView 8.1 users can directly access any Geography Network
(www.geographynetwork.com) or ArcIMS map service which can be added as another
layer of information in the GIS application. Using ArcView 8.1, users can display data,
pan, zoom, apply projections, and much more with any live Geography Network service.
The Geography Network provides ArcView 8.1 users instant access to a rich source of
geographic information from around the world.
ArcView 8.1 is an exceptional stand-alone GIS as well as the entry point to ArcGIS,
an integrated and scalable family of GIS software products. ArcGIS consists of ArcView,
ArcEditor, ArcInfo, ArcIMS, and ArcSDE. The scalable family of ArcGIS products
extends ArcView by providing advanced multiuser RDBMS data management
(ArcEditor), advanced spatial data analysis (ArcInfo), Internet services (ArcIMS), and
high-performance spatial database services (ArcSDE). Together the ArcGIS family of
products respresents the most comprehensive, configurable, and flexible suite of GIS
software available on the market today.
ArcGIS 8.1 also features the release of a rich suite of extensions software products,
providing additional analytic capabilities designed to address specific GIS application
requirements. The ArcGIS 8.1 extensions that operate with ArcView 8.1 are ArcGIS
Spatial Analyst, ArcGIS 3D Analyst, ArcGIS Geostatistical Analyst, ArcGIS StreetMap
USA, ArcPress for ArcGIS, and MrSID Encoder for ArcGIS. Additional extensions are
planned for release in the future.
ArcView 8.1 is now available for Windows NT and Windows 2000. A subsequent
