Earth Resource Mapping supports Journey’s Into Space

Perth, 7 August 2001 - Earth Resource Mapping has donated three Image Web Server licenses to Australia’s major exhibition on space ‘Journey’s into Space: Quest for the Origins of Life’, to open at the Australian National Museum, Canberra in December 2001.

The exhibition is being planned to present Australia’s past and present role in space research with emphasis on the contributions made by specialists in space industries. Earth Resource Mapping donated the Image Web Server licenses to Australian Centre for Remote Sensing (ACRES) and CSIRO, who will develop a stand-alone interactive touch screen kiosk for the exhibition.

ACRES and CSIRO are collaborating to develop the kiosk that serves numerous high- resolution mosaic images of Australia. Earth Resource Mapping’s Internet serving technology, Image Web Server, was chosen as the application to serve the high-resolution images because of its speed and Enhanced Compressed Wavelet (ECW) compression format.

Jim Mollison, Remote Sensing Product Manager at ACRES said,”The interactive touch screen will allow Museum visitors to zoom and pan around a detailed satellite image mosaic of Australia at 25 metre resolution. The imagery will also be geo-linked to a range of different scaled raster maps. An appropriate scaled raster map is automatically displayed depending upon the zoom level. This will allow users to easily locate their area of interest at any scale and view the corresponding imagery”.

The patented ECW compression technology is fast becoming the spatial industry standard for wavelet-based imagery compression. ECW provides up to 100:1 multi-band compression at speeds up to 50% faster than its closest competitor. The ECW format also provides viewing that is 300% faster than any other wavelet-based compression format, thus adding the ability to efficiently deal with gigabyte sized image files.

Earth Resource Mapping is the world's leading image handling and integrated mapping software company, with a network of resellers worldwide. People in 120 countries use ER Mapper to prepare imagery, ECW to compress and use the Image Web Server to serve imagery.
