Logica's 3G network planning software is first to deliver service quality measures for UMTS profitability -- 3G 'Odyssey' now offers first support for location-based service planning, as well as advanced simulation techniques

Dublin, Aug 22, 2001 - Logica has launched its latest 'Odyssey for 3G' network planning tool, which offers several new 3G network milestones, including support for the latest handset locating requirements, which will enable operators to deliver new location-dependent, revenue-generating services, as well as help them meet emerging handset-location legislation.

The handset-locating capability will enable operators to provide increasingly valuable location-sensitive services, where, for example, the delivery of a local news service depends on the operator's ability to identify where the user handset is with a guarantee of total accuracy.

This need for pin-point modeling, is where Logica's latest version of Odyssey comes in, by improving the accuracy of planning the position of Location Measurement Units ("LMUs") within the network architecture.

In two recent reports on location-based services, the GartnerGroup states that location data will give mobile network operators a distinct advantage in terms of revenue generation and that such services will have significant social and economic implications for the end user, operators, service and content providers alike. Gartner also states that service providers should pay particular attention to quality-of-service issues if such location-based services are to be a success.

Through this latest development, Logica has made the network planning process crucial to the successful delivery and uptake of potentially high-value services for mobile operators of all kinds.

"This new Odyssey development has been designed to provide a business solution that will ensure operators are capable of implementing accurate and reliable 3G networks that can take advantage of value added UMTS/3G services at the earliest possible time. Odyssey's design has evolved to provide a more exact presentation of the cellular network service area in order to assess interference more accurately and comprehensively, so that revenue-generating network services are delivered with a high QoS," said Paul Gill, Logica's Divisional Director of Radio Planning.

"We are starting to see the first 3G networks coming closer. Minimising operational difficulties and maximising service revenues will be paramount in all operators' minds. Odyssey now helps with both issues. These major enhancements to Odyssey are not only of strategic importance to Logica, but mark a radio planning milestone for the global mobile marketplace," Gill concluded.

Also incorporated into the new Odyssey are advanced UMTS/3G simulation techniques, which help operators save time and money in the roll-out of UMTS networks, by eliminating the need for expensive, 'real-network' planning activities. This will enable the delivery of a far better quality of service from day one.

Odyssey forms part of Logica's turnkey approach to the provision of next-generation applications and services. The company's complete 3G portfolio will provide operators with the design, consulting, network end-user services and programme management to rapidly deliver all network IT infrastructure and applications necessary to supply revenue-generating 3G cellular operations.
