Denver, CO (August 22, 2001) – Intermap Technologies and EarthWatch Incorporated, of Longmont, CO, announced today US $1.387 million (including channel costs) additional tasking in two new delivery order modifications to supply high-accuracy mapping data for aviation safety projects in Alaska sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
Intermap previously contracted to gather highly precise digital elevation mapping data on heavily traveled air routes through mountain passes in Alaska. The additional tasking provides for the collection of elevation data for significantly larger area around each pass. As well, two of the original passes have been combined as one and an additional pass has been added to the task bringing the number of sites acquired to eleven.
“A lot of work by various groups and individuals went into defining these areas so that they not only meet the needs of our NASA research program, they also serve the needs of Alaskan aviators and others as well. Since these sites have a history of being hazardous to flight and heavily traveled, an additional benefit accrues to the public by having this data readily available when synthetic/enhanced vision display concepts become certified for use,” commented Del Croom, NASA researcher investigating database issues for synthetic vision systems.
“The goal is to improve aviation safety using sophisticated three-dimensional digital images integrated in the latest avionics systems,” said Mike Bullock, Intermap’s Vice President of Sales and Business Development. “Aviation safety is of concern to all” Bullock added. “Now, state-of-the-art technologies are being brought together to reduce navigation errors and improve safety in a wide range of flying conditions, day or night.”
The Synthetic Vision Project is being conducted by NASA’s Aviation Safety Program (AvSP). Intermap’s high-resolution digital elevation data will be collected as part of an EarthWatch contract under NASA’s Science Data Purchase project.
Intermap Technologies captures and produces highly-accurate digital mapping data for use in a wide range of applications, including planning and engineering projects, navigation systems, and to enhance the accuracy and detail of satellite images. Intermap’s main office is in Denver, Colorado, and has Canadian offices in Calgary, Alberta and Ottawa, Ontario. The Company’s Class A common shares are listed for trading on the Canadian Venture Exchange under the symbol IMP.A.
