More GIS Day 2001 Features Here
The Department of Geography and Resource Development,
University of Ghana, in collaboration with the Center
for Remote Sensing and Geographical Information
Services (CERSGIS) and SAMBUS Co. Ltd. celebrated
Geography/GIS Awareness week from 20th to 22nd
November 2001. The theme for the celebration was
"Providing geographical solutions to national
development problems". The shift in the celebration
from the original date of 14th November was meant to
allow some members of the planning committee who
participated in AfricaGIS 2001 in Nairobi, Kenya to
return home.
The event, the first of its kind in any discipline and
technology area in the University, drew over 700
participants. They were aimed at promoting the
understanding of geography and computer aided mapping
using GIS. The events were used to open the doors and
laboratories of the Department to the general
university community, schools and colleges,
businesses, government departments and agencies and
the general public to showcase real world applications
of geography in general and particularly GIS.
Participants were welcomed to the celebration by the
Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Ivan Adae
Mensah. The keynote address for the open day was
delivered by the Minister for Environment and Science,
Professor Dominic Fobih. Statements were delivered by
deputy Ministers and Representatives of the Ministries
of Education, Lands and Forestry, Health and Local
Government and Rural Development.
Highlights of the celebration comprised a students'
float with police escort through the principal streets
of the city of Accra, the capital of Ghana,
exhibitions and GIS demonstrations. The display of
special banners and commemorative T-shirts added
special beauty to the 3-day event. The events were
captured on video and carried in news items in local
radio stations.
The celebration was made possible with the support of
the private sector, notably SAMBUS Co. Ltd., a local
ESRI distributor, the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Goil
Ghana Ltd., and Unipetrol Ltd. local oil companies and
Green Earth Organisation, an environmental NGO.
