ESRI Supports NRECA’s MultiSpeak Initiative
Redlands, California-ESRI, the leading developer of geographic information system (GIS)
software, announces that it supports the MultiSpeak initiative originated by the National Rural
Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA).
MultiSpeak concerns the development of a common data model for software regularly used
by rural electrical distribution cooperatives. Basically, it allows diverse applications to exchange
data through an eXtensible Markup Language (XML) interface. The MultiSpeak standard will
increase the ease of use by which different utility-oriented software packages can be integrated,
which will in turn provide significant savings to the co-ops.
ESRI has been a MultiSpeak supporter since the project’s inception. ESRI’s core GIS
solution, ArcInfo, is completely open and therefore fully supports and uses the MultiSpeak
standard XML protocol.
In addition, two of ESRI’s business partners, Power Delivery Associates (PDA) and Utility
Automation Integrators, are involved in MultiSpeak certification. PDA has achieved MultiSpeak
certification for two interfaces: CIS and Staking. PDA’s ESRI-based solution is the first known
GIS to be certified.
“We recognize that significant integration costs are a frequent barrier that prevents many
electric cooperatives from realizing the full benefits provided by GIS-enabled applications,”
comments Mitch Garnett, ESRI’s Electric and Gas Utilities Solutions manager. “MultiSpeak is
an effort we are pleased to support not just because of ESRI’s full commitment to open standards
but because we think it will put technology into more hands.”
