Spatial Analysis in Agriculture: A GIS Approach A New Course from ESRI Virtual Campus

Redlands, California -- Spatial Analysis in Agriculture: A GIS Approach, one of the latest courses from ESRI Virtual Campus, is a self-paced, introductory online course demonstrating the use of spatial analysis to assist agriculturists in precision farming.

From a basic learning module covering the underlying concepts of precision farming to subsequent modules that address spatial analysis, finding relationships, and creating maps and charts that assist in the interpretation of the data, this course covers a variety of agricultural techniques.

Spatial Analysis in Agriculture: A GIS Approach is recommended for farmers, producers, growers, planters, and other industry personnel who support crop production, as well as managers, decision makers, and students of precision farming. In addition, people who are interested in the application of spatial analysis in the field of agriculture through the use of ArcView GIS and the ArcView Spatial Analyst extension are encouraged to register as well.

According to Terry Brase, the author of the course, the purpose is clear. "The Spatial Analysis in Agriculture course is meant to give students a strong overview of how to use geographic information system (GIS) techniques to make decisions. There are many good references that describe agronomic factors, and there are several excellent references that describe decision making in precision agriculture. I think that this course gives the student the ‘how to do’ of spatial analysis. It is not meant to be a complete agronomy course or a complete GIS course and it doesn’t go through every analysis technique, but it does show the actual use of GIS techniques for spatial analysis on real data sets. The student then should be able to apply that to explore the use of many other techniques on other data they may have. I plan on using it as the textbook for the Agricultural Spatial Analysis course that I will be teaching in the spring." Mr. Brase is an agriculture technology instructor at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he teaches geospatial data collection and agricultural spatial analysis.

Before taking this course, you should be familiar with basic ArcView GIS operations and concepts. Some knowledge of agriculture data and terminology is helpful but not required. You will need a Web browser (Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher or Netscape 4.0 or higher) and ESRI software (ArcView GIS 3.1 and ArcView GIS Spatial Analyst 1.1 extension trial version available with course purchase).
