Ordnance Survey launches Internet Street Mapping
Internet mapping that leads the way
Ordnance Survey is launching a new product which will revolutionise the way mapping is viewed
on the Internet - bringing with it a whole raft of benefits.
The mapping agency’s Internet Street Mapping provides detailed street-level mapping specifically
for use on web sites and corporate Intranet sites.
Internet Street Mapping is designed to be used within Internet server-based geographical
information systems (GIS). It includes detailed road, railway, building, woodland and water
information, all designed to be shown in a traditional mapping format. For example, all the major
roads appear in their familiar colours - such as blue motorways - making the product very
user-friendly.
The ready made mapping can be used as a backdrop by both public and private businesses. For
example, local authorities will be able to display schools, libraries and other local amenities. Central
government agencies will be able to make use of its accuracy to report incidents as diverse as
environmental hazards and motorway maintenance. Commercial businesses will be able to plot their
outlets. And because the mapping provides greater clarity at road junctions and bridges, it provides
an invaluable tool when planning delivery journeys.
Elizabeth Edens, Ordnance Survey’s Senior Product Manager, says: “Internet Street Mapping has
been designed in response to customer demand. The e-business world works at a very fast pace, so
speed was of the essence. As soon as our 1:10 000 scale dataset - Landplan - was completed we
began the task of adapting it for Internet use.
“It was also important that our customers have a product which is compatible with other Ordnance
Survey applications, and which can be combined with their own information - with Internet Street
Mapping we have this. As it also includes a colour palette, customers can even display the mapping
in their own corporate colours or greyscale.”
Although the product is primarily designed for Internet use, companies can use it within their own
office-based GIS. And as it provides national coverage - not just major urban areas - locating rural
delivery routes is as easy as locating major public buildings.
