ESRI, Air-Trak.com Announce TerraTrak Solutions Low-Cost, Easy-to-Use Tracking and Messaging Solutions Bundle AVL, GPS, and GIS

Redlands, California-ESRI and Air-Trak.com today announced the release of the TerraTrak solutions: TerraTrak, TerraTrak+, and DualTrak+. Each solution provides a low-cost, easy-to- use tracking and messaging system for fleet management serving any number of industries.

TerraTrak provides graphical fleet management including automatic terrestrial vehicle- location using global positioning system (GPS) technology and real-time map display that can be easily accessible via the Web. TerraTrak+ provides the same functionality as TerraTrak but also includes powerful two-way messaging. DualTrak+ provides dual-mode terrestrial and satellite tracking and two-way mobile messaging.

“These are all turnkey solutions that are inexpensive, and we’re honored that Air-Trak has selected ESRI GIS tools as part of these solutions,” says Steve Pasquini, logistics solutions manager, ESRI. “There are a number of key benefits for businesses including increased customer service, driver, and dispatcher efficiency, and profitability. At the same time, organizations can reduce operating costs. The easy-to-read maps provide a rich array of information along with driver position.”

“The Air-Trak AVL and GPS technology provides the foundation for integrating other technologies including two-way messaging, wireless data networks, the Internet, and communications satellites,” says Dennis Clark, president, Air-Trak. “This solution provides powerful functionality typically found in high-end systems, meaning today’s small and mid-sized companies can afford to do the kinds of things only the largest of companies could do. That’s exciting.”

The wireless AVL solutions are the result of collaboration between ESRI, Air-Trak, and the Cloudberry consortium. With Air-Trak’s automatic vehicle location (AVL) and GPS providing the backbone of the system, ESRI provides geographic information system (GIS) tools, and Cloudberry provides wireless and satellite services, all of which integrate to provide a turnkey solution for small- and mid-sized online fleet management. All Air-Trak products integrate with ESRI’s ArcLogistics Route software, which provides optimized route management and scheduling. The easy-to-install, complete hardware and software packages are customizable for specific applications and can be acquired using various low-cost airtime plans.

How does the system work? The in-vehicle hardware unit receives, stores, and forwards signals from GPS satellites to servers managing time, location, speed, and heading information. GPS and message transmissions use nationwide wireless and/or satellite networks for messaging. Application service provider (ASP) services feed the user desktop with map display, with an optional Web browser component also available.

The TerraTrak solutions were developed using ESRI’s MapObjects component-based, embeddable software to provide real-time map display of vehicle locations. ESRI’s RouteMAP Internet Map Server (IMS) provides fast and efficient Internet-based vehicle routing. Future releases will include ArcIMS as the core Internet-based GIS component.

“This is a terrific suite of solutions that ultimately brings more bang-for-the-buck to users,” says Pasquini. “The technologies can be leveraged in many different ways, with MapObjects providing GIS development tools for the desktop, ArcIMS providing the most powerful Internet GIS available, and ArcLogistics Route, which can easily be integrated into the Air-Trak solution, providing advanced routing, scheduling, and route management capabilities. It can be as robust and complete as a user wants it to be.”

ESRI was founded in 1969 as a research group devoted to improving methods of handling geographically referenced data. Today, ESRI is the leading developer of geographic information system (GIS) software, with more than 300,000 clients worldwide. ESRI also provides consulting, implementation, and technical support services. In addition to its headquarters in California, ESRI has regional offices throughout the United States, international distributors in more than 90 countries, and more than 1,050 resellers and developers. ESRI’s goal is to provide users with comprehensive tools to help them quickly and efficiently manage and use geographic information to make a real difference in the world around them.
