Arbonaut and Benefon Launch New Geomessaging Solution

SALO, Finland, Mar 27, 2001-- Oy Arbonaut Ltd and Benefon Oyj, both based in Finland, are today announcing the availability of a unique new Geomessaging Solution. The Arbonaut GeoMessaging Suite 1.0 together with the Benefon Esc! GPS+GSM personal navigation phone offer revenue opportunities for service providers to develop and offer unprecedented precision location-based services for both corporate customers and consumers. Geomessaging and mobile geocommunities are examples of new applications enabled by Arbonaut Geomessaging Suite 1.0.

The Benefon Esc! GSM+GPS personal navigation phone pinpoints the user's location on the map with the help of a state-of-the art 12-channel GPS navigator. Navigation functionality includes waypoints, routes, guide, odometer and NMEA0183 interface. In addition to rich phone and organiser functions, the Benefon Esc! can direct the user to friends, special points of interest and services. Resistant to spray water and endurable, it is also the ideal personal device for sailors, bikers and skiers as well as for various professional applications. The Benefon Esc! comes with a complimentary helpdesk service for its users, to help also consumers without prior knowledge about navigation getting started easily.

"The Benefon Esc! enables service providers for the first time to offer precision location-based services for mobile people, through the open Mobile Phone Telematics Protocol (MPTP) and Mobile Map Service Protocol (MMSP) application interfaces. The Arbonaut GeoMessaging Suite 1.0 fully leverages the unique capabilities of Benefon Esc!, enabling Arbonaut and Benefon to offer service providers a complete end-to-end solution for new precision location services," says Jukka Nieminen, Director, Product Marketing at Benefon.

"Benefon embraces mobile industry standards in present and future products, and wants to contribute to the fast adoption of location services by introducing the open MPTP and MMSP interfaces to the service provider and developer community."

The new personal mobile location and navigation services, two of the most significant future applications of new GSM-technology, open up a whole new world for mobile users. It is now becoming possible to request information about the nearest pizzeria, and a list of nearby hotels with available rooms. Parents are able to locate their children, and employers, if desired, are able to track and locate their employees and follow the route of delivered goods, thus saving money and increasing efficiency. In case of emergency the origin of the received calls and messages can be located so that help can be sent to the right places.

"Only recently this kind of services were just fiction, but today with the launch our first GeoMessaging product Arbonaut GeoMessaging Suite 1.0, we can finally say that GeoMessaging has become reality," says Mr. Risto Jalovaara, CEO of Arbonaut.

"All GSM and Internet users can benefit from the Arbonaut GeoMessaging Suite 1.0 services. However, the Benefon Esc! and Benefon Track GSM+GPS wireless instruments support precision mobile positioning, making them the ideal clients for geomessaging."

Arbonaut GeoMessaging Suite 1.0 is a unique and easy to use application platform for mobile location messaging. Suite supports cross-media messages such as messaging between phones, e-mail and asset tracking devices. It converts location into an appropriate format for each terminal. Other features like composing, sending and storing GeoMessages across different carrier media are part of it. Arbonaut GeoMessaging Suite is simple and easy to use and will bring considerable benefits to those operators and portals choosing to use it.

Oy Arbonaut Ltd, founded in 1994, is a Finnish company developing sophisticated mobile location services technology for mobile operators, mobile phone manufacturers and other mobile portal builders. In many instances the company is leading the way in GeoMessaging innovation. The company is venture funded by 3i Finland, Sitra and Teknia Invest.

Arbonaut GeoMessaging Server is the heart of all the services Arbonaut produces. The services are built and implemented on scalable server environments, which enable millions of end-users communication based on location.
