IDELIX Announces PliableGIS for ArcView Version 1.1

Vancouver, British Columbia - November 9, 2001 - IDELIXT Software Inc. has announced the commercial availability of Version 1.1 of PliableGIS for ArcView, a visualization tool designed to provide "detail in context" viewing for ESRI ArcView 8.1 users. PliableGIS is a tangible example of what can be created with the Pliable Display Technology (PDT) Software Development Kit.

"IDELIX has incorporated additional PDT functionality into PliableGIS 1.1 that will result in productivity gains and new reporting capabilities for ArcView users," says Dr. David Baar, CEO of IDELIX. "PliableGIS 1.1 is a powerful tool that will assist users not only in efficiently navigating and accessing geospatial data, but also in highlighting and communicating essential local details in the full context of larger geographical regions. We believe that this will result in measurable efficiency gains and added value for our customers. With the new softcopy and hardcopy output capabilities, PliableGIS 1.1 represents the next phase in our PliableGIS for ArcView roadmap. It will be followed by more advanced versions with access to the full ArcGIS toolset, including full editing capabilities."

PliableGIS provides a dynamic lens that enhances detail within the center of the lens. Connected information is continuously redistributed around the center of the lens, not hiding any of the image surroundings. Conceptually, the image is treated as a "pliable" or elastic image that is stretched to give the optical impression that a portion of the image is being brought closer to the eye. That region of interest is still connected to the whole image - it is not discontinuous. The result is viewing detail without losing a view of the "big picture". No information is hidden or moved off the display, making it easy for users to simultaneously navigate and magnify large images and maps in a way that is more intuitive and more efficient than existing zoom, pan and inset viewing technologies.

The existing Version 1.0 capabilities include customization of lens magnification scale, shape, and size. Extra features now available in Version 1.1 include:
  • Printing the data set with the PliableGIS lens
  • Exporting the data set with the lens to bitmap, tiff, and jpeg graphic formats
  • Viewing of the lens position coordinates in a lens properties dialog box
  • Viewing of the scale within the focal region of the lens
  • Adding of a lens scoop control to adjust the shoulder slope of the lens

Embedded within PliableGIS is Pliable Display Technology, (PDT), a patents-pending technology created by IDELIX. PDT is unique in that it can create more space for a region of interest by redistributing space around that region without introducing occlusion. PDT lenses encapsulate this spatial redistribution engine behavior. A lensed display helps focus the untrained eye on an area of visual importance. Customizable lens properties control the size of the region of interest, the amount of extra space created for the region, and the overall span of the lens influence. Within the extra space created by the PDT lens, you can enlarge an object, display more detailed information, or display different layers of information.

Pliable Display Technology is a geometric transform that is completely reversible. It can alter the display of data, while keeping the original data intact. Data seen through a lens can be edited and the changes will propagate to the original data at the original reference scene resolution. PDT is data format independent, and is implemented across a wide range of platforms including PC's, Internet, and handheld/wireless applications. The Application Programming Interface supports all common operating systems and was developed with portability in mind.
