English Nature Invests in Cities Revealed for Marine Conservation
www.crworld.co.uk
November 2001 - English Nature has selected The GeoInformation Group's high-
resolution aerial photography solution, Cities Revealed, in support of its marine
conservation efforts in Cornwall. Having undertaken a thorough investigation of the latest
digital aerial offerings, English Nature selected Cities Revealed as their preferred technology
on the basis that they could deliver a high quality and cost-effective digital solution.
An air survey was flown January and February 2001 for the entire intertidal region of the
Fal and Helford Special Area of Conservation (SAC) totalling an area of 145 sq kms and
6.6 Mb of uncompressed digital data. Strict parameters were placed on the timing of the
photography to ensure that the tide was reasonably low and that photography coincided
with the winter season to avoid tree cover that may otherwise conceal inland creeks.
The GeoInformation Group scanned and orthorectified the data which was corrected to
Ordnance Survey Landline, ensuring complete compatibility with other disparate spatial
data sets. The data was delivered to English Nature in the standard Cities Revealed
format complete with its new free image management software, CRImage Manager 3.0.
"At English Nature we recognised the need for a digital aerial photography solution that could
provide us with an effective means of monitoring the coastal environment", says Roger
Covey, Maritime Officer for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly . "We used to rely on hard copy
air photos coupled with labour intensive ground-truthing. However, Cities Revealed's
imagery enables us to build up a more cost-effective and realistic picture of the coastal zone
that is easily accessible on the desktop".
The air photos will be used for a broad range of purposes that will predominantly include:
closely monitoring and identifying erosion patterns and vegetation changes in salt
marshes within the estuaries,
obtaining initial information on the shoreline to help in commenting on planning
applications, and
as a base layer for GIS, which can then be overlaid with vegetation maps, or data
sets showing the rate of land reclamation in the estuaries.
Cities Revealed's aerial photography will undoubtedly help to provide English Nature with a
cost-effective solution for carefully managing the sustainable development and utilisation of
the coastline's natural resources. With the future acquisition of updated air surveys, English
Nature will also be able to maintain its accurate monitoring of the shoreline's temporal
variations.
