Denver, CO. -- October 25, 2001 – GE Smallworld, a leading provider of utility network
management software, announced today that GEW Cologne AG, a large regional gas,
electric, district heating, and water utility in Germany, has begun implementing a GE
Smallworld geospatial asset management technology solution.
Joan Myhill, who leads the GE Smallworld utilities network solutions operations in
Europe, Middle East, and Africa commented, "We are excited to be working with GEW
Cologne. GEW has many experienced geographic information system (GIS) users who
understand the benefits they can achieve from GE Smallworld software."
GE Smallworld software applications and technology will replace the existing geographic
information system (GIS) which GEW has been using for the past 10 years. Last year
when GEW decided to move to a client-server architecture, they also decided to evaluate
other GIS systems. In addition to moving to a client-server architecture, GEW wanted to
lower the cost of maintenance by moving away from customized solutions and onto
standard products. Another critical business requirement was the integration of SAP, their
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution, with the new GIS system. GE Smallworld
has teamed up with their partner, ITS, to propose a comprehensive solution to GEW.
"Ultimately, GEW selected the GE Smallworld solution because we saw the basic GE
Smallworld architecture as more flexible and powerful than that of our current solution.
The existence of GE Smallworld follow-on products, such as PowerOn distribution
management system and Design Manager engineering system was also very important to
us," said Franz-Josef Veltmann, project manager GEW Cologne. "In addition, GEW was
impressed with the competence of the GE Smallworld and ITS project team. The team
presented a high-quality offer which directly addressed our requirements."
The project rollout will be deployed in three phases. The first phase, which began on
February 1, 2001, concentrates on replacing the existing implementation. The second
phase will focus on process support and integration with the SAP ERP system. Phase
three will focus on operations management. In the third phase, integration with other
business systems, including a SCADA system and a Workflow Management System, will
be necessary.
Currently, all of GEW's digital records are being migrated to the GE Smallworld
geospatial system. The migration of the gas and water data is scheduled to be complete in
the summer of 2001 while the migration of the electricity data will be finished in the
summer of 2002. The migration also includes moving customized functionality
implemented in the existing system over to the GE Smallworld software.
After the solution is delivered to GEW, GEW's own project group will manage the rollout
and production phases with support from ITS and GE Smallworld. GEW also intends to
implement a query, view, and print solution using the corporate Intranet. This solution
will be based on the GE Smallworld Internet Application Server.
