Intergraph's Response and Recovery Efforts in New York City

September 21, 2001 -- "We have all been deeply affected by last week's terrorist attacks. As a company we are supporting response and recovery efforts in New York City, Washington, D.C., and elsewhere. Many of you have inquired about Intergraph's involvement in these efforts and are reporting on the tremendous support provided by the GIS community. This update provides the needed information to understand our company-wide support for our valued customers who are dealing with this tragic event. " - Intergraph Corp.

Intergraph Mapping and GIS Solutions

New York City Transit: With subway tunnels destroyed, roads closed, and transit routes disrupted in the city, our people are helping the Transit Dept. integrate data from several city departments into a single map. This is helping management make better informed decisions on how to restore and rebuild transportation routes in Manhattan.

New Jersey Transit: This agency is using our GIS software to develop new maps for rail and bus transportation into and out of NYC, needed since the disaster occurred.

Department of Defense: Mapping is the legacy of Intergraph. We have a comprehensive breadth of map production and cartography solutions that provide capabilities for digital and paper map production services and technology for military intelligence and operations efforts. These are areas in which Intergraph has played a leading role, in the U.S. and in many military agencies in Europe and around the world.

Intergraph Public Safety, Utilities, and Communications (IPS)

Washington DC Public Safety Center - This combined Communications Center, supporting Police, Fire, and EMS, just opened in June and has been put to the test. Our resident IPS engineers were at the center when terrorists hit the Pentagon and the word was given to shut down other Federal buildings. With a flood of calls coming in, our support team reconfigured 10 training workstations to become operational systems, increasing the center's ability to handle the calls.

Consolidated Edison of New York uses a facility management system driven by Intergraph's FRAMME software to maintain the definitive map for the electric, gas, and steam service in Manhattan and most of the surrounding boroughs. The maps are not limited to display of graphic elements; they also provide attribute information about transformers, power line capacities, installation details, and more. In addition to serving as a record of electric, gas, and steam infrastructure prior to the disaster, these maps form the basis for adding emergency service and for briefing their Board of Directors on the progress of restoration.

Intergraph Government Solutions (IGS):

The Naval District Washington encompasses 4000 square miles surrounding Washington DC and 67,000 military and civilian employees. Intergraph Public Safety systems are installed at the Navy's centralized public safety, security, and operations center. This center is designed to be the decision center for managing large-scale events. At the heart of the public safety system is Intergraph's computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system, which incorporates GIS. GIS lets personnel from different public safety agencies input, analyze, and output information in a concise form. In a complex emergency situation, it is particularly valuable that users be able to visualize incidents and their locations, and that various public safety agencies be able to access up-to-date information from a central resource. When the attack on the Pentagon occurred, the operations center continued to manage the normal calls, plus the extra load caused by the Pentagon attack. The Emergency Operations Center was activated and used by the Regional Commander to raise security and put their Fire Units on alert to help at the Pentagon if needed. Our personnel were on-site and able to quickly train the additional people needed to address the incident. Intergraph has also integrated a fiber optic intrusion detection system into the CAD system at the Center.
