New Mobile Network Access System Provides High-Speed Connectivity for Remote or Temporary Field Locations

Tachyon, Inc. Launches First Cost-Effective Internet and Enterprise Network Connectivity Service for Organizations Requiring Transportable Broadband Network Access

SAN DIEGO - April 8, 2002 -- Tachyon, Inc., the leading provider of broadband satellite infrastructure and services that augment and extend terrestrial enterprise networks, today introduced Mobile Network AccessT, the first cost-effective Internet or enterprise network connectivity service for organizations that need transportable broadband network access. It is ideal for corporations, government agencies and institutions requiring high-speed public or private network access for special events, construction sites, emergency response or other short-term or remote location applications.

Featuring a modular satellite dish and compact carrying cases that make it transportable to any location, Mobile Network Access represents an entirely new category of product, with pricing far below alternative solutions that can cost thousands of dollars per hour. Tachyon's service prices range from $600 to $2,000 per month for T-1 service, depending on the number of days that the unit is deployed.

"Until now, cost-effective broadband network access has simply not been available for remote or temporary locations," said Mark Gercenstein, Tachyon, Inc.'s President and CEO. "With Mobile Network Access, we are not only giving organizations a way to set up high-speed, high-quality broadband service both quickly and easily, but we are changing the business model for transportable network connectivity."

Tachyon's patented signal processing technology offers the fastest transmission speeds available compared to other wireless or satellite alternatives, with data rates of up to 2Mbps. While service for Mobile Network Access is currently only available in the U.S., the company's satellite capacity covers all of North America, Europe, parts of Northern Africa and the Middle East. Plans for global expansion of the Mobile Network Access service are now underway.

    30-Minute Deployment

Mobile Network Access combines Tachyon's broadband satellite service with its new Quick Deploy Customer Premise EquipmentT (CPE), which can be assembled to begin delivering high-speed access in approximately 30 minutes. Quick Deploy CPE is TCP/IP standards-compliant and allows easy integration with an organization's existing enterprise.

The CPE includes the Tachyon network router; a ruggedized satellite dish (1.2 meters in diameter, assembled), a radio for transmitting and receiving data via satellite, shipping cases, and associated cables and accessories.

Virtual Private Network (VPN) Accelerator hardware is also available as an option. Tachyon's VPN Accelerator enables industry-standard IPSec encryption protocols for companies needing the highest levels of security, delivering end-to-end encryption with all the performance of terrestrial lines.

California Department of Forestry Benefits from Early Product Use

When a devastating fire broke out in Fallbrook, Calif. earlier this year, Tachyon supplied the California Department of Forestry (CDF) with a complimentary prototype of Mobile Network Access. The CDF used the system to gain field access to important Web applications that aided in planning logistics and operational strategies across the 5,700 acres that burned in this rural San Diego County community.

"As we move forward into the 21st century, firefighters and other emergency response teams will be using the Internet more and more in the field," said Curt Itson, Battalion Chief for the CDF. "Yet traditional Internet access obtained via terrestrial land lines can be unreliable, painfully slow or simply unavailable - especially in a somewhat rural location such as Fallbrook. With Tachyon's Mobile Network Access, we experienced high-speed, high-quality broadband communications at a remote site for the first time. This had a tremendous impact on our operations and contributed significantly to our ability to respond quickly to changes in strategy."

    Availability

Tachyons Mobile Network Access is now available in the U.S. with broadband satellite service up to T-1 speeds. VPN Accelerator hardware is available as an option for secure network service via IPSec.
